News: Vexxes – Common Ground – Artwork Feature

Vexxes are not choosing the so-called ‘safe route’, the trio are giving their all to avoid getting stuck in the “hell of a daily grind”: “There’s just nothing better than playing live!” Tom, vocalist of the alt-rock trio exclaims; “Between us, we’ve played everything from large venues and concert halls, to squats and youth hostels around mainland Europe. The feeling you get when you see people singing your songs back to you is so amazing; it’s addictive.” Boasting a penchant for big, driving tunes, Vexxes debut E.P Common Ground is a collection of mini-anthems, solid guitar licks locked in tight with driving rhythms to create a platform for Tom’s soaring vocal melodies. Here the band discuss how the artwork for their release came about…

The cover for Common Ground came together pretty quickly and wasn’t really planned… We were on location shooting the video for our first single, Everything I’ve Ever Known, and hadn’t even begun thinking about cover artwork at that stage. The only thing we knew is that we wanted the EP to really grab the audience’s attention, and what better way to do that than to tie our singer to an office chair and set him on fire!

In the video there’s a shot of a guy (Tom, our singer) strapped down to an office chair with a bag on his head, and a telephone cord tangled around his neck. For us, this seemed like a fitting way to symbolise the subject of the track, which basically covers how frustrating it is working in a job you hate. To make the video that little bit darker and match the depth of the music, we blended a shot of the same chair, but on fire and without Tom sat in it!

It took us ages to get the chair to go up in flames because of the fire-resistant material, but as soon as it went up, we instantly began talking about how ‘cool’ it would look as an EP cover. We’d already agreed that Everything I’ve Ever Known was going be our debut single, so straight away we asked Josh (Videographer at Shoot J Moore) if he could send over some stills to play with.
We got the images from Josh that same week, and we really didn’t need to do anything to it, he captured it perfectly! Max had a play with the colours and incorporated a transparent layer of our ‘V’ Emblem, and it looked great.
