Behind The Artworks: Homebound - The Mould You Build Around (2017)

Vocalist of Farnham pop punk quartet Homebound, Charlie Boughton, reflects on the current crop of pop punk bands similarly trying to make their mark and how they fit in, or rather, are happy not to: “There are a lot of bands doing the same thing these days and as it's become more and more oversaturated, I find myself less and less inspired by it.” As they gear up to release their third EP, ‘The Mould You Build Yourself Around’ via Rude Records on 10th February, they are keen to give us an insight into what to expect: “I think every song on this EP offers something different. We'll always appeal to the mainstay of pop punk fans but I'd like to think we're so much more than that and hopefully people will see that with this release. It's a more mature sound; definitely darker in areas. It's a lot closer to where we want to be as a band musically.” With that overview in mind, Boughton discusses the artwork’s meaning and creation…

“We'd been following Jake Carruthers work for some time and knew he'd be the right guy for our artwork. We didn't have anything specific in mind apart from something simple and for there to be a focal point to the piece. The Mould You Build Yourself Around is based on the idea that from choosing to be in a band and to pursue music, it has shaped my morals, what I value in life, my personality, the decisions I make whether serious or trivial, literally anything and everything. The songs specifically depict scenarios whereby these things have come into act and have affected my life and relationships with others. Having explained this to Carruthers, he came back with a number of concepts but this was the one that stood out to us. I like to think it shows that even something as well-crafted and designed as a sculpture can over time, become weathered and fragile. And much like the sculpture depicted in the art, we as people are no different, regardless of the life we choose for ourselves; how we 'craft' our lives so to speak.”
