Interviews: BackBlast

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal/Hard Rock band BackBlast, from USA. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

BackBlast was thought of by our vocalist Dan Cunningham.  He came up with the name from his experience in the Army.  The backblast area is a cone-shaped area behind a rocket launcher, where hot gases are expelled when the rocket or rifle is discharged.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

There really isn’t any solid answer for than honestly.  All of us like all different types of music, but the one constant is all different forms of metal.  Our music has so much aggression but can still be articulate and beautiful.  It’s the release of writing and especially performing our music live is what makes us love what we do.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Dan and Chris are the only ones that knew each other before hand.  Their actually cousins.  We linked up with the Adam through Craigslist, Wilsen was referred to us by another band in the area, and we met Jake at a big benefit show that we played late last year.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Dan – Toss up between Lamb Of God and Dio
Adam – Iced Earth
Wilsen – Opeth
Jake – Jaco Pastorius
Chris – Lamb of God

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Our writing has changed over the past few years pretty drastically.  I think like most young bands, lyrically it was all very personal.  As we added new members who brought their own flavors to the pot.  We have been very inspired by a number of things really. Whether it’s things going on in the world (politics, tragedies, etc.) or just creating a story around characters that we create. For example, our latest EP “The Ringmaster” is a 4 song concept Ep telling the story of a being that in his mortal life was bullied, chastised and felt he was never given a chance to thrive.  He is now a supernatural being who is building his circus of those like him and torturing the mortal’s who live the live of the oppressor and bully.

6. Where was your last gig?

We just played in Frederick, Maryland at Café 611.  Very cool venue, and the name is deceiving. They’ve brought in some of the best bands on tour in the past few years.

7. Where would you like to act?

We would love to head over to Europe and head down to South America

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are some many incredible bands that we would love to play with. I guess if it was one band specifically it would be to tour with Lamb of God. First, their Virginia boys. Second, they are absolutely incredible live.  The energy they bring to every show is insane.

9. Whom not?

Good question. We’ll go with Nickelback, because that dude looks like a poodle with guitar.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

One thing that we are known for is definitely our live show.  We are not a shy bunch, and have the philosophy that if were not having fun on stage then theirs no point in playing.  I think Adam might have had a bit starting out, but now that man is all over the place. It’s pretty awesome!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

To many to count. I would say Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Arch Enemy, Lamb of God, Sevendust to name a few.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We had the honor of opening for Kataklysm last year, and the stage wasn’t that big.  They back lined the show, so our drummer barely had enough room to set up his kit on the riser.  It was VERY crammed! We started playing our set, and literally cymbals were falling all over the place and Dan had to keep his weight on the kick drum to keep it from falling off from Chris playing.  It was actually pretty funny, but definitely a weird one.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love our fans.  Over the past few years, we have started to get a strong following that have been so dedicated to our music and shows.  We really love them.

14. What do you think of our site?

Definitely very cool.  I like the fact that you guys literally cover EVERYTHING for all walks of the metal spectrum. Cheers to you guys!
