Interviews: Capital North

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock  band Capital North from USA. Check out the interview and this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the name Capital North?

The idea for Capital North came from my (Jonathan) travels abroad. I was visiting a town in Iceland called Akureyri, or as they refer to it, “The Capital of the North”. I was there in the dead of Winter, and I was just kind of struck by this overwhelming feeling or emotion that made me feel like I needed to really pursue music and keep striving for my dream and passion. That’s when I called Tony and the whole idea for Capital North kind of took shape. We feel that the name holds a very deep and sentimental meaning; a “capital” being a central person, place, or thing, and “north” being the direction to get to get there. Essentially, the name means getting back to what is important or central in your life, what you cannot live without; for us, that is music.

2.Why did you want to play progressive rock?

Honestly, we love all styles of music and listen to many different genres. When we started making music, we definitely didn’t plan or set out to write progressive rock, but rather, we just started writing what we felt, based on our experiences and emotions, and it ended up sounding the way it did. That was the beauty of “Sea To Sky”, we kind of went into it with no expectations, and really just with an open-mind and willingness to let the music form itself. We do love the style that we play but are always experimenting with other genres as well! Who knows, our next album might just be Mongolian Throat Singing… you never know what’s possible ;)!

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Tony and I (Jonathan) had been in a band called Lights In The Sky for about 5 years prior to starting this project, so we share some really strong chemistry and history. We ended up meeting Andrew “Broski” Rivas (drums), through mutual friends “Eye The Realist” and we are so happy that we did ! We are currently working with a touring bassist but hope to add a final member to the lineup eventually! 4. Each band member's favourite band? Great question, and a tough question haha! Jonathan – Portugal. The Man Tony – RX Bandits Andrew - Blink-182

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

So many things! As a band we are very are very inspired by nature and spend a lot of time outdoors, camping and hiking, or just simply meditating. Other than that, I think quite simply, our life experiences are what inspire the majority of our lyrics/songs. We really believe in portraying relatable themes and topics in our music that the listener can apply to their own life experiences and struggles. Also, dogs, we really love dogs.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at DiPiazza’s in Long Beach CA. We had an absolute blast playing with all of the bands and we really truly love that venue. It’s one of those venues that holds a lot of history and sentimental value for us as a band and for the music scene in Los Angeles as a whole! Plus, they have really good Pizza!

7. What city or venue would you like to play most?

Dang! That’s a really tough one! So many venues and cities that we want to play! Honestly, just because it holds so much sentimental value to us, I (Jonathan) would really love to play Reykjavik, Iceland, (Iceland Airwaves here we come). I think if we had to choose a city/location as a band, it would be Tokyo, Japan!

8. Who would you like to work with on your next album or song?

Great question! We would really love to work with Kris Crummett, or Casey Bates, as they have both worked on some of our most favorite albums/projects. We are already looking forward to the next release and can’t wait to get to work on it!

9. Either of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Honestly, probably every time before I (Jonathan) hit the stage, I get the jitters. I think now it’s more out of excitement rather than stage fright. However, I definitely have experienced stage fright and I think the best advice I could give is to take some deep breaths, meditate, and remember to have fun. Sometimes, you get so wrapped up worrying about your performance that you forget to enjoy it!

10. What bands have inspired you the most to create Capital North's music, band and sound?

So many! I would definitely say Portugal. The Man, RX Bandits, Circa Survive, Dance Gavin Dance, Periphery, and too many more to name!

11. What's the weirdest interaction you've ever had with a fan?

Haha!! Nothing is ever too weird for us, we like to keep it strange. But seriously, we have yet to have any crazy weird interaction with a fan, so hit us with your best shot on this coming tour, we’re ready for you!

12. Anything else you'd like to add or plug?

Absolutely! We are heading out on “The Sea To Sky Tour” from June 28th-July 11th, and would love to see all of your beautiful faces on the road! Also, please check our debut EP “Sea To Sky” streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play, and give us a follow on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube (@capitalnorthca). Thank you guys!
