Interviews: Aedes

In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Black Metal band Aedes from Canada. Check out the interview!

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

P: The idea of the name of the band came to us sometime before the recording of the EP, everything went very fast actually. It was summer and Aedes is the etymological name for a mosquito. Actually, I can not really remember why we chose this name lol

V: because we saw a mosquito net in the store and the guy on the package had a really funny “I hate my life” kind of expression on his face!

DDD: I got nothing else to add.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

V: We all appreciate the genre, but the fact that we had the opportunity to record in a church at night really inspired us to go in that direction.

P: I am a black metal fan for so many years now: Leviathan, Mütiilation, Byyrth, Mayhem, Osculum Infame and many other bands. Aedes was the opportunity to make a pure black-metal band with friends

DDD: It has always been my dream to have a black metal band and when I saw the opportunity, I took it! I’m not a big metal fan...I had my speed metal/trash metal/death metal period when I was a teenager but black metal for me has more to do with a vibe and pure sound than any technical playing or skill...Like it’s usually showcased in average metal music.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

V: Yes, we were already friends and we were taking part in a musical project together at the time, living and recording in a presbytery. We came up with the idea and saw it through (including the album artwork) in the span of like 2 days, fueled by alcohol, late nights, and other shenanigans.

DDD: That’s it...The coldest music, created in the sunniest and hot environment ever lol

4. Each band member favorite band?

P: Le Kraken, Amenra, Morbid Angel

V: Too many to name, my interests are really all over the place. I’m a solid fan of Toots and the Maytalls, King Crimson, DJ Madd (who I’ve just been getting into lately) and early ZZ Top...I also really love Oranssi Pazuzu, who are like psych-black, and Aura Noir.

DDD: I’ll go only with black metal bands since I like almost all genres: Abruptum, Beherit, Emperor, Krallice, Leviathan, Mayhem, Striborg, Twilight, Venom, Xasthur...

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

P: Life, society, what surrounds me

V: I don’t write songs, I just channel sounds. I’ve never really written songs that much, I mostly improvise, which is basically what we did on this album. We sketched out general trajectories for each song, but it was really free within those constraints.

DDD: For Aedes, I improvised the guitar riffs with what I know from listening to black metal albums...I write songs for other projects too but that is another story...

6. Where was your last gig?

V: Bar le Ritz PDB, Montréal Québec, supporting some friends of ours, En Fer.

DDD: That’s the truth!

7. Where would you like to act?

P: On a fuckin stage

V: Would be super cool to play in a cave, I think. The acoustics might be awesome, plus how metal would that be?

DDD: I’d love to play into the woods...Inside a big fucking Sequoia!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

V: DARKTHRONEEEEE

P: MAYHEM FUCKIN MAYHEM

DDD: I’m not sure I would be okay opening for any of those bands...I’d be shitless scared...lol

9. Whom not?

P: the Eagles of death metal

V: I think I’d play with anyone if they were nice. I wouldn’t want to play with anyone who takes themselves too seriously to have fun, or who would be judgemental of us.

DDD: No Nazi/racist/xenophobic/sexist/misogynist shit, that’s for sure!

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

P: Go on the stage and give your show. Don’t ask questions, just get on the fuckin  stage

V: Not with music, I never have.

DDD: Masturbate before. Endorphin is underrated!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

P: Black Flag, Bad Brains, Morbid Angel, Pantera, Public Enemy, The Beatles

V: I would say that inspiration is a culmination of everything I’ve experienced, and all the music I’ve ever listened to. I wouldn’t be able to pinpoint specific bands, I don’t think.

DDD: Like I said, I listen to a lot of different genres but Sonic Youth, Eric’s Trip, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, Neil Young, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine and Guided By Voices are pretty high on the list of those who influenced me the most.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

P: Have sex with me

V: I cannot top that. Fans don’t ever ask me anything, lol. Do we have fans?

DDD: I don’t remember anything that weird, to be honest.

13. What do you think of your fans?

P: We have friends, not fans

DDD: It sums it up.

14. What do you think of our site?

P: All good man, support the movement

DDD: I love it

15. Something add?

P: Drinks

DDD: ...and a little weed maybe? lol
