Interviews: My Dark Rift

In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Thrash Metal band My Dark Rift from Sweden. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We wanted the band name to sound cool and ”metal” but still have some deeper meaning to it. The name My Dark Rift came from the astronomical phenomenon known as the Great Rift (or sometimes the Dark Rift) the idea was to point out the connection between both the intimate scars that we carry in our human souls as well as the vastness of the rifts that run straight through our galaxy.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We all grew up listening to hard rock and metal, so it really was a no-brainer for us deciding to play heavy music. We have one rule when writing songs together: ”if it’s good it’s good no matter the exact genre”. We refuse to limit ourselves to one single subgenre and love to explore all nuances within the hard rock and metal universe.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes! Some of us has played together in other bands before this. My Dark Rift actually started out as a side project among friends before it evolved into something more serious. Our friendship is the foundation of the band.

4. Each band member favorite band?

David (guitar): Slayer
Kristoffer (guitar): Mastodon
David (vocals): Soilwork
Kenneth (drums): Shinedown
Mattias (bass): Pantera

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

We are inspired by many things: books, TV-shows, movies, other artists, and life itself.

We also get a lot of our ideas from the mysteries of the deep space and the many horrors that linger beyond the event horizons.

6. Where was your last gig?

We are a newly formed band and haven’t had the time to play live yet. We’ve been busy recording and releasing our first two singles: Make Me Stronger and Devil’s Thunder. However, we will perform our first live shows this fall.

7. Where would you like to perform?

There are many cool venues here in Scandinavia, so we will probably start here, and later conquer Europe.

8. Whom would you like to perform with?

It would be cool to share stages with other Swedish metal bands like Soilwork, At the Gates, Opeth, Mesuggah, Amon Amarth, In Flames, etc.

9. Whom not?

We stay away from bands with shitty attitudes. Music is about having fun together.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Well, not really. Maybe in our younger years. Nowadays we just have a few beers and get on with it. A tip would probably be to ”just do it” enough times until it gets easier. No one will remember if you drop your drumsticks, forget the lyrics or slip and fall. Just go all-in and have a great time!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Meshuggah. Pantera, Soilwork, In Flames and Mastodon have probably inspired us the most.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

”Do you guys play funerals?” - Come on, what kind of question is that? Of course, we do.

13. What do you think of your fans?

They are absolutely awesome. We are truly grateful for all the love and support we get right now.

14. What do you think of our site?

It’s the shit! Great features (obviously), cool design and an over-all kickass site.

15. Something to add?

We’re currently making a music video for our latest single ”Devil’s Thunder” that will be released within the next couple of weeks. Our third single will be released later this summer, followed by an EP in September. So prepare yourself for more epic stuff from the My Dark Rift headquarters.
