Interviews: AS I MAY

In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Modern Metal band AS I MAY from Finland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

As I May was a song title of our first ever written song. After many beers and couple shots of whiskey we started to talk with Ville, what would be a great name of a band? We didn`t figure any better name to the band than As I May. I don't know if it was a beer or a whiskey, but yeah, that is how we came up bands name. Then we changed the name of a first single to Disease and wrote lyrics passed to that.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Well, I don't think that we thought to play any genre. It's just what people say that we play. We listen to a lot of different genres. Like I think that our songs go forward so fast cause of punk rock. We want to change the atmosphere just when you start to get used to it. Machines and programming come from In Flames. But overall yeah I think our genre is some kind of modern/old core.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

We all knew each other, but only Lasse and Jani have played together over 20 years. We have just quit that "forming band state". After Tipi joined the band, we felt that the circle is closed. Everything is in good balance.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Tipi Motörhead, I think I don't need to explain why. Lemmy is maybe the greatest frontman that there has ever been. Lasse It depends on the day. I think today it's Rancid. Jani Tuure Boelius, That guy is going to be a big star in the future. Vote Definitely, Danny, I like to listen to artists that are as old I am.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

If you are a creative person, I think you have to need to create something always. But overall we think that need to create something comes from a feeling or you need to express something. You might have some tragedy that you need to go through. It`s good for your mental health and it might be the way we deal with emotions. Don't know if that is healthy or not but that`s how it goes.

6. Where was your last gig?

It was our sound engineer's birthday party last year. We took the whole year off to make this album. Had a lot of thinking to do, when Tipi joined the band. Creating sound further etc.

7. Where would you like to act?

Wacken. We think that`s a holy grail in heavy metal. Tipi is only one in the band who has played in there. What an asshole!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Well, we haven`t really thought about this. In one point we talked to make a cover from one of Prodigy's song, but I think it`s not ok now.

9. Whom not?

Well many. I think we need to like their staff even consider to feature with.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I think everybody has stage fright in some way. Normally it is those 5 first seconds and then it's gone. It builds up the whole day. There`s that atmosphere presence. The right amount of beer and you don`t get any stage fright, but the normal amount of beer keeps rising from gig to gig and it doesn't end well. The best way is to learn to play sober and then have a couple of beers.

We have a rule that no beers before you are on stage in these days. Kippo ( Children of Bodom, Ensiferum ) told us a funny story from C.O.B. He recorded their live show and played to them after a show in car on a way to home. Kippo said that maybe it would be better to look how much beer you guys drink before a gig. So guys figured out the same thing, that no beers before a show. Kippo said that it was normal that the keyboard player drank 12 beers during the show.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Hard one. Maybe In Flames. Think all of the guys have different bands they like and that brings different spices to our sound.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Trying to remember one. There`s a lot of funny stuff. If I can remember correctly, some girl asked Plectras or drum sticks in a festival. Jani gave a girl Lasses boxers. Later at night, it started to rain and the girl used Lasses boxers as a hat so that her hair won't get wet. Don't remember was those boxers clean or not.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We are so humble from everything that we have had. Fans are the reason why we do this. Without their support, it would have no point. When we released Disease, some girl from France was in a hospital. She suffered from anorexia and doctors had to put her in hoses. She heard the Disease in the hospital and gained strength to keep fighting with her disease. She wanted to bake a cake to us "ironic", but I think those kinds of stories keeps us for making this.

14. What do you think of our site?

Actually, I spent on your site like an hour. Behind the tracks is great. It's something that isn`t on every site. There could be more stories behind the tracks. People love stories. Track by tracks is also really great. We like to listen to albums as a whole, so that will get us interested. It's really great that there's this kind of sites that core fans can find new staff.

15. Something add?

A word from our upcoming album. Our new album is like the whole story. You need to listen to it from the beginning to the end to get a full experience. It's like a journey. You will hear great melodies, big singalong choruses. That is what we do: catchy melodies and big choruses. Your head is banging and a couple of seconds later you will hear very beautiful sounding parts. Album sounds huge, I mean really huge. We broke a new record in our producer's studio. Album has 529 different tracks. Yep, 529 tracks and just little over 30 min. It's fast moving forward and just stays in vibes so long that you have little time to breathe before it`s time to go again. There are small details everywhere. You can`t hear all of those at one listening. It´s just something that you won`t expect. If you like metal, catchy melodies, big choruses, modern sounds, this is an album for you!
