Interviews: Signs Of Reign

In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metal band Signs Of Reign from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

DA: We actually didn't come up with any name until we had written a good share of our first album. Matt picked the name from one of our songs.

MJ: Yes, Denny is correct. We chose the name from one of Denny’s lyric lines from our first album “New Beginnings”. It’s from the Title Track.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

DA: I've loved Prog rock/metal since I first heard Queenryche and Fates Warning. No other genre holds my heart like Prog.

MJ: It’s in our blood. It’s what comes out naturally for both of us. The tempo changes, driving guitars, bass and drums, soaring vocals. It’s our favorite type of music.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

MJ: We did not. Like a lot of musicians, we found each other online. Shared some ideas through email with each other and it was a match made in heaven. The chemistry between Denny and I was very strong right from the beginning, both liking and wanting the same thing. As time went on with writing our songs, a strong lifelong bond and friendship manifested between us. This I feel is a key to any writing partnership and it has in turn resulted in our music to just keep getting better.

4. Each band member favorite band?

DA: Fates Warning would have to take my cake! For years, Queensryche and Fates Warning were tied for first place, but as the years progressed, Fates Warning became the obvious choice for me.

MJ: Too many to pick LOL. For me classic bands like Priest, DIO, Maiden, Queensryche, KingsX, Dokken and somewhat lesser-known bands like Tad Morose, Jag Panzer, Tibuzy, Vicous Rumors, Nevermore, Sanctuary round it out for me.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

DA: I don't consider myself to be a religious person at all. However, I do believe in the realm of spirits. When I write lyrics, I ask God (the "Ether", or whatever you will call it) to use me as a conduit. Lyrics just flow. I introduce ideas without interpretation (usually) so that the listener can derive a meaning that applies to their life. Force-feeding my spiritual interpretation would make me no different that some politician or television evangelist. Not my gig.

MJ: Lots of things. Life, death, the bands listed above and many more. Just the joy of coming up with song ideas is something I do every day and is just a part of who I am. Not doing it would be a Dichotomy unto me.

6. Where was your last gig?

DA: We have never played a show as a band. Signs of Reign has always been a collaborative entity and we haven't had any full-time members in the band (bassist, lead guitarist, etc.) to date. This is the first record we actually only had one drummer and Kevin was an amazing contribution to our vibe. We had 4 drummers on our first one (Including Mark Zonder and Sina Doering).

MJ: I play every week with a band called “The Therapeutics” which is a working band at a Security Hospital that features talented patient musicians. Outside of that, like Denny, I’ve played many shows in the last 25 years ranging from original bands to cover bands. In the last 5 years, I have stepped away from that and concentrated on doing only original music, and honing in on the art of audio production.

7. Where would you like to act?

DA: If we were to play shows, I'd love to do a festival. Like some Rockfest or something.

MJ: Same as Denny. Festivals in South America and Europe as well as in the USA.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

DA: I don't know that I would consider us to be in the "Big Boys" category, but I hope we would be featured alongside Queensryche, Symphony X, and others like them.

MJ: Bands of the same genre, playing to a crowd that is there because they love this type of music.

9. Whom not?

DA: Modest Mouse! LOL!

MJ: While I respect all forms of music, I don’t think the Hip Hop or Bro Country crowd would like us. LOL

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

DA: Although we have never played live as a band, I personally have played my share of shows. So I don't speak from a lack of experience. Stage fright? I've heard of it but haven't fallen victim to it yet. The advice I would give is this: Think of the stage as glorified band practice. It is an opportunity to do what you love to do. Just close your eyes and do what you love, what you know you are good at, what you do at practice (maybe minus the beer!).

MJ: Never suffered from it, but way back, in the beginning, I was super nervous and lost sleep over it, just thinking about it. It drove me to practice more, which made me a better player. I would say I always have some nerves tingling at least leading up to it, but after the first few songs, I settle in and am fine.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

DA: Aside from the former mentioned, I personally find inspiration in Rush, Skid Row, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Pantera, Yes, Kansas, King Crimson, Stryper, and even some GNR (there are more but those are the main ones).

MJ: All the bands I mentioned earlier, but recently the band ARK (Burn the Sun), Crypt Sermon (Out Of the Garden), Rival Sons, Any Sabbath album with Tony Martin singing on it.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

DA: I've only ever been asked for my autograph (which I don't think is weird at all).

MJ: I had two ladies offer me a little "something, something" right in front of my wife LOL. At least I found it weird.

13. What do you think of your fans?

DA: I think that if a person is a fan of Signs of Reign, that person is a "Unique". A Unique someone who bucks the system and refuse to conform in order to maintain freedom. I love and have great respect for anyone who is Unique.

MJ: The fans are EVERYTHING. They are the lifeblood of any band. We appreciate anyone who takes the time to listen to our music, interact with us, pick up a copy. I would agree with Denny, our music is relatively unknown, so any fans who take interest in us are probably hardcore music fans and seeking out new things.

14. What do you think of our site?

DA: Very professional. I especially like how it is geared towards promoting talent that flies under the radar.

MJ: I agree. It is amazing and much appreciated that you guys are out there seeking out new bands and promoting them. We thank you more than you could know!

15. Something add?

DA: Our album will be available on most streaming services very soon. Until then, download it on Bandcamp and don't forget to Turn It Up!
