Interviews: SAIL

In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Sludge Metal band SAIL from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Naming the band was actually horrendous. We spent months whittling down lists upon lists of name suggestions trying to find something that fits both us as people but also the music we make. “Sail” did all that and more, there’s a sort of presence to it that really stood out to us.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I think like many bands it’s hard to feel attached to any one genre. Our genre, whatever it may be, is what gets us excited as musicians it’s the sound or feel that we want to put out into the world and which describes us best. We play our genre because that’s really kind of who we are.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Oh god yes. We’ve all been friends for a long time regardless of being in a band. Tom and Charlie and I all met in college and Tom knew Kynan through uni. I think that bond really helps in writing.

4. Each band member favorite band?

Tom - Mastodon

Tim - The 1975

Charlie - White Snake

Kynan - Baroness

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

We draw from our lives, like most people do I guess. Take a moment from your life boil it down to that raw emotion, it’s what connects people to music really. Or sometimes it’s dinosaurs.

6. Where was your last gig?

In Bristol at the Old England. It’s this incredible little venue, tucked out of the way. They’ve given us some incredible gigs and we love playing there!

7. Where would you like to act?

We’d love to go back to Scotland, Ireland is another big one which we have the sincere pleasure of getting to tour later in October. America would be the dream though.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Pretty much anyone. We’re a try anything once kind of band. Big ones would be torche, mastodon, baroness and Billie eilish.

9. Whom not?

Eluveitie, just the worst with a terrible frontman. Well actually mostly I hate the frontman. Well, actually exclusively the frontman who is a complete tool.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

You know it’s weird, personally I don’t get stage fright if I’m playing with the guys. If it’s just me then I’m an absolute mess of nerves but that seems to fall away when I play in the band. That being said deep breathing is absolutely the one every time. In through your nose, out through your mouth. Get that good good oxygen flow. (Also booze, but not too much booze)

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Baroness are a big one. There’s an incredible artistry to every part of what they put out. The 1975 are another inspiration in the same vein. I think the bands that inspire me most are the ones that live that art and know what makes them who they are.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Our good friend Jamie of Wizzarding promotions asked us to play at his wedding. It was this beautiful little venue in the heart of the countryside. It meant the world that he even thought of us and it was just the most fun to play!

13. What do you think of your fans?

We are nothing without our fans. They are those incredible magical people who listen to our music and understand. I adore each and every one of them.

14. What do you think of our site?

I think it’s really cool! The promotion of underground bands is such an incredible thing and it’s something we really rely upon. Keep up the good work!

15. Something add?

We have just recently released a brand new single “Starve” find it on YouTube, Spotify, iTunes! We also have some absolutely gorgeous T-shirt’s designed by our very own Kynan Scott. He really knocked it out the park with them so definitely worth a buy!! And also thank you, to you for giving us a chance to talk about our music and to anyone who listens to our stuff and says yeah that’s my kind of thing!”
