Interviews: Tokyo Taboo

In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band Tokyo Taboo from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We wrote down a list of names and we felt Tokyo Taboo fit us the most. We love all thing Japanese : anime & manga. Love the ‘creepy cute’ style they have. I think we are both a bit creepy whilst being cute on the outside! The ‘Taboo’ part comes from Dolly being really outspoken in her lyrics and just in general. She doesn’t mess around and says what she thinks.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We started out as a solo pop act with a band and slowly went heavier and heavier. We never decided what genre of music to play. We just evolved over time to where we are now.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Dolly put up an advert and auditioned Mickey as a guitar player for a pop project and from there we just got rockier and more badass!

4. Each band member favorite band?

Dolly: Halestorm

Mickey: Pink Floyd

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Dolly: Hearing different amazing lyrics make me want to write. Sometimes I’ll think up a new theme for a song whilst going about my day. Could be just a word or a commonly used phrase. The lyrics just come out sometimes so I always have my phone handy and wrote everything down.

6. Where was your last gig?

We played at the Worcester Music Festival over a week ago. The crowd were fantastic and really loved Dolly’s pole performance.

7. Where would you like to play?

Download 2020. Pretty please?!

8. Who would you like to support?

Halestorm, Paramore or Marilyn Manson Or all three?

9. Who not?

Not very picky. We are a fan of anyone making any kind of music as that shit is tough!

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Dolly used to drink heavily to get rid of pre-gig nerves. Now she’s over a year sober. Best not to get in the habit of using Dutch courage in the first place as that’s a hard one to get out of. Create a persona who is a stronger version of you and it will become easy to ‘play a role’ onstage rather than be stuck in your own head.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Pretty much any band we listen to inspires us in some way: Marilyn Manson is a big visual and musician influence. So are Madonna, Queen, and Bowie.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Dolly gets hassled a lot of after-shows for ‘hugs’ She usually tells those creepy guys where to go. Repeat gig-goers she’s happy to hug and chat with but complete strangers who want her sweat on them - no thanks!

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love anyone who buys merchandise, shares anything and champions the band. And most importantly those people who travel to see us perform. I’m sure there are other things they come be doing but they chose our show: yes baby! Big compliment!

14. What do you think of our site?

Fans of you before! Even bigger fans of you now!

15. Something to add?

Whiskey is out now October via TT Records.
