Interviews: Die Ego

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band Die Ego from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

It comes from the idea that we believe our society sadly has become egocentric and self-centred, not everybody is willing to give a hand or be there when is needed, for instance many people spend plenty of time in social media pretending to be something they are not, boosting their ego, looking for attention. This does not apply to everybody of course , don’t get me wrong, but is an issue we all experience and see in different levels. Die Ego means the death of the ego, to stop caring only about yourself and pay attention to what’s going on around you, be more grounded. Initially we came up with different names that represented this idea but funnily enough if you split my name in two ways you get the band’s name, Diego - Die Ego, is a bit of a wordplay and it sounded good to us.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We all grew up listening to rock music and heavy metal, writing and playing this music style is what always felt and still feels natural to us. There’re legendary bands in the genre that have been part of our lives since we were kids and discovered music. It was never a decision, it is what we are.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

No really, the music got us together and that helped us develop a great friendship

4. Each band member favorite band?

That is always hard to tell especially if we have to pick only one. There’re bands who are always there and constantly inspire us, one of my all-time favorite is “Black Sabbath”, Gabe’s could be “Death” and Dave’s “Tool”, all of them very different from each other which is quite interesting.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

The music itself and the possibility that it gives us to express ourselves as individuals and connect with others that feel the same way. For us, the band is the place in the world where we can be ourselves and hide noting. We truly enjoy writing music together and be inspired by each other.

6. Where was your last gig?

We played in London at the Lounge 666 at the end of February as part of a Festival. Now we have a mini-tour coming up in the midlands to promote our debut album release. We’ll be touring along with Ygodeh and The Medea Project, we are very excited about it!

7. Where would you like to play?

We would love to tour across America and play some summer festivals in Europe and the UK but, to be honest, we are happy to play anywhere there’s a fan wiling to listen to our music.

8. Who would you like to support?

I guess it would be amazing to support a band like Lamb of God just to name one of the many we would love to play with. It is not only because we like their music, as fans we know what it feels to be in big arena show and how music moves you, having the chance to play for a crowd like that, like us, would be a dream come true and a huge honor. One the other hand, I’d like to say that as an unsigned band we have the chance to play and discover bands who are really pushing the envelope and coming out with great music and tight gigs, some shows are very special and give us a whole new perspective on the scene, that is tremendously inspiring.

9. Who not?

I never thought of that, we are kin to play with any band that feels right to us.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I personally never did, in fact, I’ve been always quite the opposite, I can’t wait to be on stage!! We all had a live experience when we formed the band so I guess that fear was long gone. Although depending on the show, the venue, etc sometimes you get the “butteries” in the stomach but I take that as a good sign, then you get on stage and let it all out! My tip for any beginner would be just gone for it and have a good time, in the end, that’s all that matters in a live show.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

We all come from different backgrounds, socially and musically so this is an interesting question for us. I still find inspiration in the bands that shaped me as a musician, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Ramones, The doors, all the old classics I would say. Gabe has his roots in Death metal and loves bands like Death, in flames and Carcass. Dave grew up listening to Grunge and he is into more progressive bands too; Alice in Chain, Tool, Architects are his jam. All those diverse music genres played a huge role when we were writing the album, keeping an open mind and trying to blend those styles is what makes us sound as we do.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

To sign a jacket with a permanent marker, the request is not that weird, I found weird the fact that I’m not a famous guy and it was a really cool jacket haha, but if it was worth it for that person I don’t see why not.

13. What do you think of your fans?

To be fair at the stage we are right now and depending on the city we play, some people never heard of us before and they get to discover the band as they listen to our music for the first time live. So far we had an excellent response in the shows and we love to see how the crowd gets immersed into the whole experience our music brings. Occasionally we get the chance to hang out with them after the gigs and is overwhelming to hear the feedback people give us. Hopefully, this will continue to grow and we’ll reach a wider audience. We are very thankful for everyone that comes to check us out live and when we see familiar faces in the crowd and people coming back to our shows it feels amazing.

14. What do you think of our site?

A site that gives you access to discover an upcoming artists of all styles, listen to music for free and also the chance to buy it, is nothing but amazing. You are doing a great job and we are grateful that bands like us have a platform like this. Horns up for you!
