Interviews: Dyatlove

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band Dyatlove, from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Sam: It all started with an obsession with the Dyatlov Pass incident that took place in 1959.

Rikki: Seeing as the Dyatlov Pass conspiracy is such a heavy topic and with the fact that Dyatlov is also the last name of the dude that set off the Chernobyl nuclear blast, we figured we would throw an ‘E’ on the end of it, for DyatlovE”. Try to add a little brightness to all that horrible shit!

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Sam: Originally I wanted to start an experimental instrumental band… but then I just felt the need to sing something! I’ve always liked emotional progressive music that really grabs ahold of the listener.

Rob: I’ve been listening to a lot of these kinds of bands over the last few years, now was the time.

Rikki: I feel like this band is such a combination of different styles that we are kind of hard to peg down and that's what I love so much. It's easy to play this “genre” when we don’t really have one. Any idea can be a Dyatlove idea…

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Rikki: Sam and I have been friends for years, always with the plans of starting some sort of music project together. We had known Rob and Justin through the local music scene well before we started Dyatlove too.

4. Each band member favorite band?

Rikki: One favourite band is way too hard! I think we might be able to narrow it down to 3 a piece?? We all listen to a ton of music!

Sam: Bright Eyes, Nirvana, Explosions In The Sky.

Rob: 1. Angels and Airwaves, Love the epic positive vibe with the beautiful soundscapes and pop hooks. 2. Rush, I mean it’s Rush. Life long hero worship! 3. Wu-tang Clan, need I say more??

Rikki: Gouge Away, Touché Amoré and I’ve been REALLY into Mannequin Pussy and State Faults lately. I’m the one always trying to throw in the 2-minute bangers to the song ideas! And we got some coming for you…

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Sam: I’ve always loved creating art, and my music is my best outlet for dealing with what ails me.

Rikki: Like Sam, it’s all about creative release. I’m not a nice person when I can’t play music so I might as well stick with what works! All my life I have found that music is the one artistic medium that really speaks to me. When a song really slaps I feel that shit in my soul. I’ve always wanted to make music that makes people feel that same way.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at the Railway Club in Vancouver, Feb 7th. There were plans for more shows… Until the world stopped.

7. Where would you like to act?

Sam: Locally I would have to say the Commodore Ballroom is on my bucket list.

Rikki: Yeah I agree with Sam. In Vancouver, it is definitely the Commodore… Venue wise I loved the Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, NY. City wise I’m all about anything Europe and South America. To be honest we just want to be able to play wherever people want to hear our music!!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Rikki: Chelsea Wolfe and Emma Ruth Rundle are two of my faves. The both bring the emotion and the power.

Sam: I would like to play The Chariot reunion tour but that’s never going to happen…

9. Whom not?

Sam: I think if there are bands you don’t want to play with, you’ve got bigger problems to deal with! I just love to perform and share our music and I try not to let that kind of stuff get in the way of that passion.

Rob: R. Kelly.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Rikki: Oh man, I get stage fright every time! The first song of our set I always feel like I might be having a heart attack! But that the same reason why I love playing on stage so much. It really makes you feel alive!

Sam: I suffer from mega stage fright. I always have since I was a young kid. Personally, I think that’s just part of performing and caring about our art. If the nervousness ever leaves me, then I’ve probably lost the love of what matters most to me.

Rob: I've never had a nervous show in my life. I’m always just excited to rip it up!

Rikki: Tips to beat that? Just remember why you’re up there. It's all about that love!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Rikki: For sure (right now) its Emma Ruth Rundle and State Faults. Of all time? I’d say Alexisonfire, Converge, Bruce Springsteen, Sonic Youth, Outkast, Cocteau Twins, Radiohead… I could probably go on forever…

Sam: I have so many musical inspirations, basically anyone and any style of music that has emotion and feeling to it. When someone is willing to open themselves up to others and share whatever it is they created through that struggle or happy time in their life is really special and inspires me daily.

Rob: In Dyatlove from a drum perspective mostly Hum and Holy Fawn. Hopesfall as well.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Sam: I’m still waiting for those weird fans.

Rikki: I know it's not weird but I still fumble around when I get asked for guitar picks. I once gave a loonie by accident, because I couldn’t find anymore picks in my pocket. I miss that loonie sometimes…

13. What do you think of your fans?

Sam: I love our fans. I think they’re the best! I love and appreciate anyone willing to take the time and get down to the music I make.

Rikki: I agree with Sam. Our fans are rad. Full-on support from day one. The idea of it makes my heart swell like the grinch.

Rob: Never don’t love your fans!!

14. What do you think of our site?

Rikki: Love the site! Great way to check out new bands and all their info. You guys have everything up there a heavy music lover could ever need! I STRONGLY recommend. And holy sub-genre! Haha. ANYTHING you could possibly be in the mood for!

Sam: So fresh, so clean!
