Interviews: Iron Wings

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Thrash Metal/Heavy Metal band, Iron Wings, from Latvia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned or came it just like that?

Andris(bass, vocals): There were many ideas on how to call our band, but one time we came up with the idea of Iron Wings, which also sounds very good in Latvian. We liked it, and after a while we knew that it's the name of our band.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Andris(bass, vocals): My whole family are musicians, and rock music has always been a part of it. Beatles, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc. I grew up listening to these classical rock monsters while learning professional music from the age of 5. The more I listened, the more I sought out and connected to even heavier music. And when the time came when I started playing and composing music myself, the search stopped right next to the music of the heavy thrash genre.

Dainis (guitar): because its loud and heavy.

Valdis (drums): I want to play the same stuff that I listen to.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Andris(bass, vocals):  Our former and first guitarist was a friend of my childhood and school. We started and together we created Iron Wings. After a while we met our drummer Valdis in a really fun way. If I remember correctly, it was my birthday when we were at the bar. When we had to split paths with our first guitarist, we started searching for a new guitarist. We search in many different ways. We also had an audition for some new guitarists. After a few auditions we even managed to play a few concerts with one of those new guitarists. But our current guitarist Dainis,  we only knew from social networks and other music projects. But when we invited him to join our group, he showed interest and brought the missing part to the group that we had been looking for so long. And now I can say that this is the best and most unified Iron Wings group we have ever had.

Dainis (guitar): I joined the band not so long ago. At that moment i didn't know anyone.

Valdis (drums): I had met Andris a few times before joining. I ran into him at a bar where he was celebrating his birthday and he told me that they were looking for a drummer. A few months later we had our first gig and that’s the date we celebrate our birthday, January 13.

4. Each member's favourite band?

Andris(bass, vocals): For me would be: Lamb of God, Slayer, Megadeath, Rotting Christ, Motorhead,Vader, Solstafir,Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, John Butler trio.

Dainis (guitar): For me it is Children of Bodom

Valdis (drums): Queens of the Stone Age

5. Who or what inspires you to write the songs?

Andris(bass, vocals): I could say: everything around us.  Everyone can write a love song at least once in their lifetime. But it is much harder to write about things that people don't want to talk about. I write about things and situations of life

6. Where was your last gig?

Andris(bass, vocals): Before the quarantine we were in Lithuania in the club Lemmy. The atmosphere there was very good and the listeners were very supportive!

7. Where would you like to act?

Andris(bass, vocals): I like to play wherever people are united and stand for metal as a genre. I like this crazy atmosphere. Connection to the audience and listeners. It's magical! Of course everyone dreams about some great big gig in a crowded arena, when all folks sing together with you and sing your songs. That would be fantastic. But also not so big arenas share the same feelings when you are connected with your audience. It's the best drug that a musician could get. Maybe one big dream that I have could be: one day share the stage with the band Lamb of god.

Valdis(drums): K! Pit

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Andris(bass, vocals): Lamb of god, Megadeath, Exodus, Vader,Testament.

Valdis(drums): Anthrax, Baroness

9. Whom not?

Andris(bass, vocals): It is always a pleasure to share the stage with different bands. That is how you can learn something musicaly, it is always a different experience. So i don`t know. Nothing comes in mind.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Andris(bass, vocals): Of course, many times. It was mostly when I studied at the music academy. But most of that was then, when i need to play by myself alone. In a band you all are like one big organism. If somethings goes wrong, especially in the start of your career, the biggest secret weapon are your bandmates. If you trust them, you can get over almost everything. Of course there will be some failures, some bad concerts, but also bad experience is still experience.

Dainis(guitar): I had when i first started playing gigs. I usually had three beers before the gig to calm the nerves.

Valdis(drums): There was one time when I had to go out and start playing first. Focus on your bandmates and try to ignore the crowd. That way it’s more like rehearsal and less scary.

11. What bands have you inspired the most?

Andris(bass, vocals): Definitely Lamb of god, Slayer, Led Zeppelin, and many classical composers like : Beethoven, Wagner, Berlioz and closer to our century: Glass, Riley, Part.

Dainis(guitar): For me it's our own latvian band Skyforger.

Valdis(drums): Slayer, Anthrax, Black Sabbath

12. What´s the weirdest thing a fan ever asked you for?

Andris(bass, vocals): There are some things which are better kept a secret.

Dainis(guitar): What`s that beehive sounding pedal I use. At the time it was a metal zone

13. What do you think of your fans?

Andris(bass, vocals): They are power and fuel that fills me up. Without them I don't think I could do that. Like I said before. This connection between listener and musician is magical and like a drug for me.

Dainis (guitar): They are awesome.

Valdis(drums): I had to move my cymbals to see the headbanging better. It’s a cool problem to have.

14. What do you think of our site?

Andris(bass, vocals): It is easy to understand. And a really good place to know more about new bands.

Dainis(guitar): I like, that in the site you can find a lot of different bands, from different genres. That is really cool.

Valdis(drums): For me, I think it is cool, that you have your own Spotify playlists and that you have the option to choose the music genre and then you have a lot of information about bands – interviews, reviews etc.

15. Something to add?

Dainis (guitar): Long live metal !
