Interviews: Duality

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band, Duality, from France. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The band’s name comes from a teenagers’ dream to for a Metal band. Back in those days, Slipknot’s hit “Duality” was on top of the charts. We thought that one day, we may write powerful songs too!

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

From our very first songs, we’ve been attracted by the Prog side a song can have. You can use many variations to make every song unique and different while remaining coherent. Moreover, we listen to very diverse stuff and get inspired by all this.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Maxime (bass) and Logan (guitars) used to play in a band when they were teenagers. Jérémy and Julien knew the former drummer, Guillaume. One day, as we were distributing some flyers at the Mondial du tatouage in Paris, we met Anthony Dubois, a photographer and one of Clément’s friends. He told us to contact Clément, which we did, and the rest of the story begins with the shooting of the video for the song “Fluffy Cloud”.

4. Each band member favorite band?

Jérémy: Monuments

Logan: Veil Of Maya

Maxime: Gojira

Julien: Opeth

Clément: Meshuggah

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Most of the time, the theme will emerge from what we feel about the musical atmosphere. From a song to the other, we often try to create a guideline so that the whole tells a story. We are influenced by many media that surround us, and in the music business nowadays, it’s pretty hard to stand out… So we have to try and have fun, try various techniques and tell stories everyone can identify to.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our latest gig should have happened at Le Cirque Electrique in Paris, that should have been the release party for our new EP “Elements”… But due to the COVID 19 events, we could not play it live for now…

7. Where would you like to act?

We’d love to perform in great festivals such as TechFest, Euroblast, Download, Hellfest, Motocultor, Wacken etc…

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are so many bands we love… Some of them are even far from the music we play, but it would be amazing to spend some time with them to learn from their experience: Monuments, Counterparts, Make Them Suffer, Polaris, Animals As Leaders…

9. Whom not?

There’s no one we wouldn’t like to meet! Sharing the stage is also an opportunity to talk with fellow musicians before and after the show. A unique chance to learn and grow up, for sure!

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Never! We’ve always been very enthusiastic. It’s normal to get stressed, but the adrenaline gets us crazy and the stress quickly disappears! As soon as the show starts, it’s all about pleasure, but you have to be prepared to give your best every time.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

We’re more inspired by genres than by bands (Modern, Prog, Core, Post…). We love to mix a lot of influences because you never really know what you get in the end, and it’s way more funny this way!

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Once, a fan asked if we could photograph him with Jérémy’s guitar… Without Jérémy!

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love them, and we can’t wait to meet them again! People who like Duality are generally metalheads who like Metal in its widest form, without boundaries or labels, and it’s quite appreciated.

14. What do you think of our site?

It’s crystal clear and very accurate. Some of the sections you propose, we had never seen them before. For instance, the whole section about albums artworks is really interesting! It’s a different way to approach the artist’s vision. We’d be thrilled to be part of your next “Stay Djent #2” sampler!
