Interviews: Sidelines

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the  Post-Hardcore band, Sidelines, from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Sidelines came to Josh while he was working on some demos. It came out of a feeling of not wanting to remain on the musical sidelines and wanting to push out into new areas.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

The genre was just naturally what we leaned towards. We’ve always really enjoyed the Core scene. The most attractive thing about them for Sidelines in particular is the ability to be unabashedly honest with your listeners. We talk about mental health, struggles of faith and sickness in the family and to be able to just be as honest and frank as you want helps with catharsis which is the main goal of the music we make.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

None of the members were very close with each other before the band formed, just hanging out and occasionally playing music with each other.

4. Each band member favorite band?

For Joshua it’s definitely Underoath, for Kiran at the moment it’s Invent, Animate and for Fraser it’s Deftones.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

It may sound cliché but life is the biggest inspiration. Sidelines was started as a catharsis to talk about things that we went through and catharsis comes from talking about the things you’ve been through and being honest about them.

6. Where was your last gig?

Before COVID we played The Slaughtered Lamb, it was a great show with a bunch of new faces. It’s a pretty small venue but they tend to be the most fun shows. You can really get the crowd moving and make an impact.

7. Where would you like to play?

Headlining a sold out venue like Alexandra Palace or the Electric Ballroom would be insane. We’ve seen so many amazing bands play those places and to follow in their footsteps would be a dream come true!

8. Who would you like to support?

Our favorite bands obviously come first, but other bands would obviously be the giants out there, like Asking Alexandria, Parkway Drive, My Chemical Romance and also just some other bands we love like Conjurer, The Devil Wears Prada, La Dispute, so many bands it’s hard to name them all!

9. Who not?

I think the main type of band that we wouldn’t want to play with would be any with allegations out there. We want our audience to feel safe to be themselves, especially since our music touches such personal and vulnerable subjects, and playing with people that very obviously make other people feel uncomfortable or in danger is just not something we want to do.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I think it’s normal to get nervous. My advice would be to use that nervous energy to better yourself, whether through practice or getting the jitters out by throwing yourself across stage, lean into it, be earnest and acknowledge that if people don’t like your music then they don’t like it, and you always have the next show or even the next song to improve and win people to your side.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Our favorite bands are obviously huge inspirations, but bands like Conjurer, Counterparts, Knocked Loose, Architects, Being As An Ocean all affect our sound. Whether it’s a cool idea we have when listening to them or just wanting to write a riff you could find in one of their songs. Above all else we try to sound like Sidelines, luckily we feel we’ve gotten pretty good at taking these inspirations and making them us.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Someone asked for some of Josh’s hair before, but he has a lot of it so that’s not surprising. The people who listen to our music all tend to be really cool people, I don’t think they’ve ever crossed the line into weird requests, at least not yet.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Hey if you like Sidelines we think you’re fantastic. A lot of the people who come out and watch us tend to have experience with mental illness or just general hardship in their lives, I think that’s led to this really nice community of understanding, thoughtful people. We love seeing familiar faces at our shows screaming their lungs out with us.

14. What do you think of our site?

We think it’s a great place to find new music! We’ll occasionally hop on the site when we want some new music to listen to and know we’ll have loads of luck here.

15. Something to add?

We’ve got our new single Hangman coming out next month on the 4th of September, we’re really excited about it and think you’ll love it!
