Interviews: Lethian Dreams

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Doom Metal band, Lethian Dreams, from France. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We had an idea of the meaning we wanted for the band name, the thinking was mostly about finding the right words. We wanted the spelling and pronunciation of the words to also evoke something. That’s when we had the idea to use the elvish word « leithian », meaning « deliverance » that we decided to spell « Lethian ». 

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

This came up quite naturally, we always composed focusing on the emotions in our music, it was in heavy, slow and atmospheric songs that we could express ourselves the best.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes, we already knew each other. We had the same passion for music and shared similar tastes, this led us to compose songs together and eventually start recording them.

4. Each band member favourite band?

It’s gonna be difficult to limit the answer to only one band. For me, I would say: Anathema, Slowdive, Shape of Despair, Empyrium and Agalloch

Carline: Alcest, Wolves in the Throne Room, Alice in Chains, Slowdive, and recently Holy Fawn

Pierre: Katatonia, Nachtmystium, Russian Circles, Soror Dolorosa, Alice in Chains, Clutch

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

What I feel. For me the composing process never starts with any particular idea about the song. I just start playing and follow my feelings, if a melody I’m improvising makes me feel enough emotions, then I record it and start working a song around it. I usually improvise guided by the emotions I would like to feel, like if I want to feel soothed, or feel like I’m somewhere else, in a place where I feel good, in that case I’m in a way influenced by seasons and wilderness as it’s often where I try to escape.

6. Where was your last gig?

In Eindhoven, in 2014

7. Where would you like to act?

I love traveling to Spain, UK, and my own country, so I would love to play there, but to be honest anywhere people are willing to see us as the place itself doesn’t really matter, the people do.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Any of my favorite bands. In general, any band whose music is emotional and sincere

9. Whom not?

Bands whose style is too different from ours.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We didn’t play a lot of gigs so I hardly qualify as somebody who could give tips on that, especially as I’m never really comfortable on stage. I usually try to be carried by the music we play.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I think our influences were present on our first album as it usually takes some time to develop a more personal style, that’s why you can find influences from Anathema, Katatonia, Empyrium, Agalloch and Saturnus in it.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

I guess we are lucky cause we were never asked anything weird.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Even after 18 years sharing our music, I still find it amazing that people are touched with the emotions we share in our songs, it’s always heartwarming to receive messages from fans who express how they relate to our music.

14. What do you think of our site?

First, congratulations for it, I know how much time it requires to create and manage a website as I’m a web developper, I admire that dedication to support the underground. It’s very rich in content, so much info! And also some really nice features like the bandcamp and Spotify playlists.
