Interviews: Broken Calling

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band, Broken Calling from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Jack: It was a play on words about a previous band four of us used to be in. We thought that was our calling but it turned out to be a complete shitshow

Martin: we had pages and pages of names this one just popped out and wasn't awful.

Connor: It was either that or Bison…….Probably the better choice for our music.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Jack: It's the best genre to play!

Martin: Because I'm too hyperactive and hazardous to play any other genre.

Connor: Because I’m always screaming, on the outside and the inside...

Callum: It's heavy and grooves but still has space for chanting.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Jack: I knew Connor Martin and James from our old band. Callum is just a random homeless guy we found who can shred.

Martin: I don't know if we can know each other any better at this point. At various points I've actually lived with Connor and Callum.

Connor: Who are you guys again?? Oh yeah, I, James, Martin, and Jack caught STDs, Luckily we got rid of, but we did get Callum, Jury is still out on the verdict for that one.

Callum: I've known James for years, the rest of the guys got lumped with me when I got asked if I wanted to be an idiot on stage with them.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Jack: Lamb Of God

Martin: Foo Fighters

Connor: Linkin Park

Callum: Bury Tomorrow

James: Fields Of The Nephilim

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Jack: I don't really get involved with the writing, I just lay the groove once its been written

Martin: I could wax lyrical about song writing all day but due to limited space, it's dependent on mood. Sometimes you wake up at 3am with a fully formed idea then you have to unravel your own thoughts, sometimes you'll be messing around and a song will happen and sometimes it's a crafted work of art that you put months into before realising its in ⅞ or something stupid.

Connor: My anger against the world, and Writing stuff for me and the guys to get hype over.

Callum: I get riff ideas from how I feel at the time, I might even daydream and get a riff idea if I'm bored

6. Where was your last gig?

Jack: Does anyone remember when their last gig was?

Martin: The Carved Dive in Orpington (Don't quote me on the town) very sweaty which is the best.

Connor: The Carved Dive Bar in BROMLEY MARTIN!!! A gig in a box with some of our best people, sweaty and crazy is how we like it.

7. Where would you like to play?

Jack: would love to play at a festival like Bloodstock or Download

Martin: Right now anywhere, honestly I'd play a garden party in the snow, just want to play.

Connor: CAN SOMEONE JUST BOOK US PLEASE! Martin is getting antsy again.

Callum: Absolutely anywhere with a crowd that wants to mosh.

James: In a massive auditorium where we can do full stage design and productions for our sets

8. Who would you like to support?

Jack: to be honest Id support Billie Eilish just to get a fucking gig right now.

Martin: I concur, I'd even support 5 seconds of summer if it got us out on the road again.

Connor: I’m with these guys, I’d support The Wealdstone Raider at a nightclub if it meant making some noise.

9. Who not?

Jack: null

Martin: Ian Watkins. He doesn't get any support.

Connor: If you abuse people or take advantage of people, get.off.my.show.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Jack: I used to, I just used to really back myself and my talent though. I would practice messing up so i could still catch the beat if it happened live.

Connor: Just think it could be worse, you could be a Conservative

Martin: I get crippling stage fright before basically every show. Just embrace it, if you can force yourself through the first, I'd say 30 seconds, that fear translates itself into the biggest hype and you'll play harder and just get lost in the show so much more coz in a more vulnerable state of heightened emotion.

Callum: most shows it hits me, I try to get myself hyped up before I go on, which isn't difficult with this lot.

James: I never get the stage fright issue, the excitement fuels me. that , or my Autism is so strong that i don’t even have the concept of stage fright

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Jack: I would say 36 Crazyfists, who are a metalcore band inspired, my playing the most and I add some groove metal chops to mix it up.

Connor: Linkin Park and Slipknot, and plethora of bands in the NuMetal, Metalcore and Hardcore scene

Martin: I genuinely couldn't name any particular band. I used to love watching live music videos as a kid, just used to have me throwing myself around the living with a stick I pretended was a guitar crowd surfing on the sofa and generally losing my absolute sh**. So I guess music inspired me to play music.

James: Tonally, Karnivool is one of my biggest inspirations (especially the bass on Simple Boy HOLY MOLlY). When it comes to the actual writing of the bass parts, I don’t really have an inspiration (obviously there must be something somewhere, but i can’t quite put my finger on it); I use my extensive knowledge of theory to write basslines that are effective to compliment the rest of the song… unless it’s fretless stuff, then Beyond Creation really plays a part in what I come up with

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Jack: No one really talks to me cuz I’m packing all my gear up.

Martin: I've mentioned it before but a fan bought a thong off me I'd worn onstage as a joke. You could wring that thing out, it was rank. Still he seemed pretty happy.

Connor: A Condom...Luckily the band I was in had them as merch!

13. What do you think of your fans?

Jack: They're pretty sick. I mean anyone who appreciates the music we make deserves a medal in my opinion.

Martin: Great people and very passionate.

Connor: We love them, and I’m with Jack, anyone who likes us deserves a medal putting up with us.

Callum: they've got more energy than all of us combined, and we've got a Martin!

14. What do you think of our site?

Jack: Very cool and useful for finding new bands!

Martin: It's good to see people keeping a community alive because let's be fair, we all have instant communication at our fingertips and are worse than ever at talking to each other.

Connor: The best site ever, and I haven’t said that about ANY OTHER SITE (promise)

15. Something to add?

Jack: Bye Trump

Martin: More than three shakes is playing with yourself.

Connor: You got this, life is shit, but just think...It could be worse, you could be a conservative. Also get the new single Redemption, it’s great.
