Interviews: Poison Oak

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band, Poison Oak from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

It’s a title from a Bright Eyes song. I’ve had the name floating around and had some nice artwork with it, so I guess this was a chance to use that.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

I don’t think it was ever really decision to play any sort of genre, it’s just we write songs and they come out the way they come out. I think if you go in making sure you write to one specific genre or style it really strains the creative process.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yep, we all knew each other beforehand. Ray, Russell and myself had known each other for years and were friends before the band. I work with Lachie, and had played music with Chris beforehand. I know some bands just try and track down the most technical musician they can find and go from there. But, I think it is more important to be mates, to make a band work.

4. Each band member favourite band?

I wouldn’t say our favourites but bands we have been listening a lot too, recently.

Ray – Silversun Pickups/Violent Soho

Russell – Tom Waits

Chris – Green Day

Lachie – Kieth Urban

James – The Cure

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Life experiences is my main inspiration for song writing. The daily grind, relationships and all the experiences life are the important ingredients, I believe for song writing.

6. Where was your last gig?

We played an online gig for a company called Sounds on the Couch. It was pretty cool and happen during co-void, as we couldn’t play at any venues etc.

7. Where would you like to perform?

Anywhere at the moment, to be honest due co-void. It could be a local venue in Townsville or Entertainment Centre, as long as we are performing.

8. Whom would you like to perform with?

I reckon Paul Kelly would be a good, he is a bit of an aussie icon, and a classic Australian songwriter. I think performing with him, would be more like a hangout of sharing stories.

9. Whom not?

Haha, I really can’t answer this question, because I never put any thought into something like this. Hmmm, some musicians have many styles they play, someone may play in a pop or jazz band perse, however, maybe a great reggae, funk or rock player. So, it’s a hard one. I would judge this one on someone’s personality rather than ability/style.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

When I was a Teenager and first started performing I was definitely nervous to get on stage. I think magnesium is really good, it settles down the brain, so eat any food that contains magnesium is great for relaxing your mind. Banana’s etc.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Probably for myself personally – Powderfinger, The National, Gang of Youths and Smashing Pumpkins just to name a few.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Can you give me a lift six hour north to Gladstone...

13. What do you think of your fans?

They’re living breathing humans, of whom all work jobs and experience life, just the same as me.

14. What do you think of our site?

Yeah it’s pretty cool, I like the Koala and no more fires compilation.

15. Something to add?

February the 14th is when our next single comes out, “Sarah”. Be sure to check it out!
