Interviews: Within Nostalgia

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Black Metal band, Within Nostalgia from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Within Nostalgia focuses lyrically a lot about emotions, personal experiences and reflecting on the past for a different perspective today. The band name is a reflection of “within one's past”.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Metal has been a huge part of my life for a long time and I feel like when I write music, it kind of just comes out this way and doesn't have any genres in mind other than my own. I think this is what makes it unique and hard to put into a specific genre.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Kye and I had actually started dating before we joined a band together. We had a long-distance relationship (I lived in Burlington) for about a year before I moved here and we started playing music together. From the beginning, it was always so natural jamming with him and I think we make a pretty good team.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Kye's favorite band is Type O Negative because of the instrumentation and how the bass is used in such a unique way. My favorite band would have to be Enslaved because of their dynamics and how they portray such emotion in their music with every album.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Kye and I both feel like we are very inspired by nature. We enjoy going for hikes and spending time in the woods for inspiration. Personal experiences and negative emotions definitely get vented out into our writing process.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at The Fraser here in North Bay with our good friends Astaroth Incarnate from Toronto which was a really great show.

7. Where would you like to act?

When shows become a thing again, we would eventually love to travel out to Western Canada. I think it’s safe to say that it is both of our dreams to visit and play Europe, to countries such as Scandinavia and Holland.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

The band that we would both love to feature with would be Alcest. They are a big inspiration to both of us and their style is probably the most relatable to ours.

9. Whom not?

We have played shows with death metal bands and because the vibe is so different, I think that it just takes away from our sound and makes it harder for people to connect to our music because of the energy change in the room.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Even though both of us have been playing live shows for many years, we still get nervous before playing live. I’d never want to lose that feeling of that rush before going on stage but the way I would try to beat stage fright is to get my mindset in the right place and to not overthink anything. Everyone is there to have fun and you can’t take yourself too seriously.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Like I mentioned before, our music is quite relatable to Alcest and we always strive to be able to create emotion through our music that the listeners can relate to as they have done with us. For myself, even before I played in bands, watching live shows and local bands play would always inspire me to be able to create music with such a fulfilling outcome.

12. What is the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

As a band, we haven’t really experienced any strange requests but Kye has actually had someone ask him to sign a $5 bill after playing a show with an old band outside The Comfort Zone in Toronto.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We are so thankful for each and every one of our fans and we always strive to make music that they can connect to. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that your creation is appreciated and enjoyed.

14. What do you think of our site?

Breathing the Core is a great site to check out new backs and I really like how you can search bands through genre and sub-genre. If you’re ever looking for some new bands it is a good site to check out!

15. Something add?

Thank you very much for this interview and hope you are doing well in these strange times!
