Interviews: Enigma Ex Machina

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metal band, Enigma Ex Machina from Brazil. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The band name came from an idea to represent life itself. We originally came from the latin expression deus ex machina which in modern dramaturgy means a suddenly resolution for a plot, and we think that life is just the opposite of that, being a sequence of sudden problems and mysteries we have to solve during our lifetime, so we came with the expression Enigma Ex Machina

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

That's a funny question, because when we started composing, we didn't have much idea of what genre we were fitting, and still to this date we don't have it for certain. I believe that we came with different musical backgrounds, making a pretty interesting mix of ideas and influences which result in a quite different music.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Me and André (guitar) were in some bands before, we know each other for more than 10 years, João (bass) and Arthur (drums) host podcasts together for quite a while also. I was introduced by a common friend to Arthur and on that very first day he became our drummer, and later he brought João with him.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Timbó: "Today I'm very much into The Ocean, their latest album is sooo good." Artur: "Today? Baroness, it can be another one tomorrow if you ask me..."

André: "Black Label Society, Dream Theater, Foo Fighters, Pantera and Trivium"

João: "Death"

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I'm very inspired by things that happen to me, either being good or bad. Omniphobia, our first single, for example, was inspired by my anxiety issues, and the songs try to represent the same feelings I have when having a crisis. Revelations is about the power of information nowadays, and how people use it as a weapon, especially for fake news and such. Many of our riffs and progressions came from studying our instruments and always saving the practice sessions haha.

6. Where was your last gig?

We are still waiting for the first one! Since we officially started during the COVID-19 pandemic, we didn't have any opportunity to perform live, except for some online festivals, with pre-recorded material.

7. Where would you like to act?

We would love to play outside of Brazil, but we also know that our country has many nice places to perform too!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

A personal dream of mine is to be able to collaborate and learn from Devin Townsend. He's a composition master and would love to work with his crazy ideas.

9. Whom not?

Can't think of someone whom not. I believe that any experiences could be good, at this moment.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Personally, I was never afraid of the stage, but it is normal to feel that anxiety before playing for the audience. But there are three factors that I consider essential and that help to reduce anxiety:

1) Practice the setlist tirelessly, because confidence in what you will play is very important to fight anxiety.

2) Stretching before going on stage not only helps to warm up the body, but also serves as a natural relaxation. Helps a lot!

3) An extremely powerful exercise that can be done at any time or place is: visualize the show! Imagining yourself playing the songs, enjoying with the public and the band makes your brain understand that that situation is pleasant and over time it helps to reduce anxiety before and during the shows!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

In our first EP, we were very influenced by The Ocean, Gojira, Jinjer, Mastodon and Karnivool

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

I don't recall any weird things happening, but I think there will be plenty of time for it on the future hahaha

13. What do you think of your fans?

We are still working in our fanbase, but those who follow us are awesome and always participate in anything we are involved with

14. What do you think of our site?

The website is AWESOME. I don't recall knowing anywhere else with such a variety of genres! Amazing work for those, like myself, who enjoy knowing new and exciting music! Congratulations on the work!!!

15. Something add?

We would like to welcome everyone to follow us in our social media and to listen to our EP, The Event Horizon, available on all streaming platforms
