Interviews: Residual Self

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band, Residual Self from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The name comes from the term ‘residual self-image’ which is the concept that individuals tend to think of themselves as projecting a certain physical appearance, or certain position of social entitlement, or lack thereof. Rex and the band aim to bring forth the “Residual Self” in everyone who listens. Awakening the true primal nature and unveiling what’s at the core of the soul.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

I was heavily influenced by the gothic sounds of the 80’s and the grunge movement of the 90’s, so as a solo project, the sound was slow, deep and ambient which can be heard on the ‘Hollowfication’ sessions which are streaming now. Over time, working with Josh and Dave, the songs started to change. We became heavier and faster as a whole. Dave, as a drummer is heavily influenced by ska and punk, where as Josh is very into metal which can be heard in his articulate guitar playing.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Dave and his brother hosted open mics which I used to frequent. We clicked pretty well and started working together in numerous bands through the years. Josh was another musician who used to show up at the open mics and has also done work with Dave in the past. When we all started playing together, we used to go around performing cover songs, but after hearing my music, they wanted to help and build upon my original ideas.

4. Each band member favourite band?

While it’s hard to choose just one band out of everything we all listen to, we’d have to say: Rex’s favorite band is The Smashing Pumpkins Josh’s favorite band is Periphery Dave’s favorite band is NOFX

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Inspiration truly comes from what’s going on in my life, or those around me. Drawing parallels and relating it to the demons and sins we find lurking about

6. Where was your last gig?

The pandemic has hit The US quite extremely. Our last show was at the beginning of 2020 at a place called Cherry Street Station. It’s a great spot that supports the local metal and rock scene for original bands. It’s one of the staples of CT and our talent.

7. Where would you like to act?

While we’d all be happy to tour the world anywhere and everywhere we can play. Dave and Rex would love to tour Japan most of all.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Being able to join Rob Zombie on a tour, or collaborate in the studio with him and his band would be a dream. Also, doing a tour with Dark Mirror Ov Tragedy, who is also the roster of Sliptrick Records would be so cool. I feel our two bands would click and put on a great show together.

9. Whom not?

There’s no one in particular we wouldn’t work with. We truly believe you can learn from all experiences, good and bad, and a bad experience could even be good fuel to write more.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We think every beginner will deal with this. It’s something that if you keep repeating, one day you won’t even think about it. Starting out, find something that acts as a comfort layer for you. For Rex, a hood or a pair of sunglasses has helped. Even Dave has been known to cover his face with a hat.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

While we draw inspiration from all over with the styles we play for our respective instruments, the sounds that Rex aims to produce is inspired by Rob Zombie, Type O Negative, Alice in Chains, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Cradle of Filth.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We played a show once, and this dude loved our sound, but he was so drunk and didn’t have any money for merch, he actually tried to trade his clothing and started to take his shirt off. It was so hysterical we just gave him a CD

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love our fans and are so thankful for their support. We couldn’t do what we do without them. Always happy to talk to anyone after a show and we always stick around to make sure you’re able to communicate with any of us.

14. What do you think of our site?

Your site is so amazing and great to discover new awesome acts across the globe! The way it’s set up makes it extremely easy to find any type of music you’re looking for. The Spotify and Bandcamp features really set you apart from the rest. I recommend this site for anyone looking for new material and bands.

15. Something add?

We’re excited for everyone to be involved in the next chapter of Residual Self, and we hope you enjoy what we do for years to come.
