Interviews: CURIMUS

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Death Metal band, CURIMUS from Finland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Juho Manninen: The name comes from the Finnish word "Kurimus" which means a "mystic vortex" in the sea that swallows ships and seamen.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Juho: When the founding members started the band, i guess the goal was to aim for a Sepultura - Soulfly-kinda groovy approach. As years have gone by, those "tribalish" influences have pretty much perished. Nowadays we go for an intense, in-your-face thrashy approach that's kinda become our thing over the years.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Juho: Well, yes and no. As the lineup has changed a bit over time, it'd be boring to explain the whole details. Shortly, I knew none of the guys when I joined, Marko (Silvennoinen, vocals) and I knew Jari (Nieminen, drums) before he joined but only I've known Tommi (Ahlroth, guitar) since knee-high.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Juho: This one's difficult. For me, it kind of depends on the mood. One day it might be Cannibal Corpse, ABBA the next. Marko listens mostly to prog-black-weepyweepy or whatever, Tommi might be more of a heavy metal fan and Jari's music taste is way too fucked up to even talk about.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Juho: Life, I guess. I've never listened to any band and thought "whoah, that's what I want to mimic".

6. Where was your last gig?

Juho: Our latest gig was in Bar 15, Seinäjoki, Finland in November 2020. As you can guess, the plague has pretty much fucked up all our wishes in having an album release tour at this time. 

7. Where would you like to act?

Juho: Wacken / Metaldays or something like that would be nice. Obscene Extreme also, but I guess we're not brutal enough for that one :D

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Jari: We love to perform with any band that is passioned about their music / playing and fun to party with. We have met our share of assholes over the years.

9. Whom not?

Juho: That might be a long list :D

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Juho: For my part, i couldn't honestly say that. Pre-show-restlessness at most. 

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Juho: As I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure that we draw our inspiration music-wise directly from any band. I don't actually even listen to our style of music that much. But, surely there are echoes of Slayer, maybe The Haunted and swedes alike. And good 'ol Venom of course. Also Finnish singer Kake Randelin is a big influence for every member of the band.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Juho: I've written my autograph on a guys ass. Actually i wrote "Marko" on those hairy cheeks, but that's irrelevant.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Juho: Well, they surely aren't the brightest ones out there. Kidding of course, if someone likes the noise we're making i couldn't be more grateful for their support.
