Interviews: Scent Of Surface

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore band, Scent Of Surface from Sweden. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We had a couple of choices, Night Bullet was one of them but in the long run, we found Scent Of Surface more like us.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Because we feel comfortable with each other when we play metal and everyone has a certain interest in playing it, so it has always been a matter of course.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Some of us, yes, and some just came in on the way haha!

4. Each band member favourite band?

Okay so here we go:

Rasmus: Tool, The devils blood, Opeth, Between the buried and me

John: Enter Shikari, Dance Gavin Dance, and Every Time I Die

Lukas: Gravemind, Chelsea Grin, Slipknot, and Linkin Park

Leif: Plini, Periphery, Meshuggah, After The Burial, and Jacob Collier

Andreas: Slipknot, Korn, Tool, Gojira, Jinjer and Rammstein

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Lukas: I really like songs that just feels so big that you almost can smell it, epic choruses and easy listening overall, I can listen to a Black metal song or even go to a football match and hear the fans singing and feel inspired

Leif: For me, learning jazz standards and music theory, really inspires me to try different concepts out. It helps me break out of ruts and helps me write more interesting music. And combining jazz with metal it's such a fresh way of writing for me! Chick Corea and Plini helped me discover this!

Andreas: When I'm in the process of writing music I just say if I don't like anything, but when I write drums Mario Duplantier, Rey Luzier, Evgeny Novikov, Abe Cunningham, and Vladislav Ulasevich

6. Where was your last gig?

Tuben in Farsta together with Deadlocked State, A Lethal Smile and Kerbera. It was a hell of a show!!!

7. Where would you like to act?

Rasmus: Woodstock or Rock In Rio

John: Knotfest

Leif: Tech Fest

Andreas: Rock Am Ring, Resurrection Fest, Hellfest, Knotfest, Download

Lukas: In a full dirty stone basement with cheap beer, or Buffalo so I can eat Buffalo Wings

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Leif: I'd love to have Plini feature in one of our songs. Or if could be featured in one of his. His playing is just so fresh and expressive. It's incredible! Other than him, Per Nilsson from Scar Symmetry would be killer! Incredible guitarist and songwriter!

Lukas: I would love to have Scarlxrd or Ghostmane in one of our songs

Andreas: Chino Moreno. I think that Till Lindemann would help us make a good music video also if he was a feature in one of our songs. And also Alex Terrible.

9. Whom not?

Lukas: Bring Me The Horizon

Andreas: Sabaton

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Leif: I personally haven't although I've worked with many who have. Some things I'd like for people to remember is that... It's just music. No one will die if you're not playing perfectly. It's fine if you make mistakes. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will get. Practice standing up. Practice in front of a mirror if necessary. Also remember that being in a studio or home studio, is not nearly the same as being on stage. They're 2 different beasts and you need practice in both fields. Study the greats. Look at live shows with your favorite acts and pay attention to how they deal with stuff. And again, can't emphasize this enough... It's JUST MUSIC. Don't worry about that mistake that just happened. Let it go instantly. Shit happens. Most people don't even hear it.

Lukas: It actually hasn't happened often but back in 2019 when we opened up for In Flames when I saw how many people it was out there I lost my shit the first song on the setlist and then I felt like I was in rockstar heaven with Lemmy Kilmister or some shit. Just take a deep breath and do it, trust me, after a while, you will feel that everyone is there for the same reason as you, to see the show.

Andreas: Never had it, so it's hard to say. But of course, it was a little bit nervous our first gig, but when you see all the people like your music and moshing, you just go with the flow and having fun. Just like Lukas said, just take a deep breath and don't overthink that your fly is open or that you got a pimple behind your ear.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Lukas: Cradle Of Filth, Raised Fist, Emmure, Calvin Harris, Ghostmane

Leif: I think Plini, After the Burial and Periphery has inspired my metal playing the most. Love all of those bands. In general Chick Corea, Snarky Puppy, Chet Baker and those groups and artists has had a huge impact on me in my musical growth.

Andreas: Slipknot, Korn, Rammstein, Deftones, Slaughter To Prevail, Tool

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Andreas: it was during a gig on our tour where a guy came up behind me while I was checking all the technical stuff and tapped my shoulder and said I was playing well, I was not prepared for that haha

Lukas: Every time someone asks me to stage dive I find it weird, sure the person who is asking for it may not know that I hate to do it, but every god damn time it always ends up with me afraid as hell surfing with my but on peoples hands

Leif: A manly fan asked me when I played a gig a few years ago, to show him my d**k. Live. On stage. Sorry to disappoint you there bro haha...

13. What do you think of your fans?

Leif: I think they're dope and I really appreciate all the support of each and every one of them! Seriously thank you! ❤️

Lukas: Bro we are all the Scentfamily, there are no fans, only band members who are not playing any instruments.

Andreas: For all those who are still with us and all the new ones: thank you for all the support!

14. What do you think of our site?

It is a fantastic initiative that you line up in this way for all bands that want to come out a little more and maybe get to be seen a little more than they would have done otherwise! It's also a great way to find new awesome music.
