Interviews: Old Man Wizard

We have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Heavy Rock band Old Man Wizard from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

I was driving with my friend, and he pointed out a person in another car on the freeway and said, "Hey look, it's old man wizard!" And I told him I thought it'd be a good band name, and he disagreed. I used it anyway.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

The guitar was my first serious instrument, and I learned to play in rock and heavy metal bands, so the style has always been really fun for me. All of my favorite artists in the style set themselves apart by choosing uncommon chords, harmonizing their vocals, and keeping their guitar lines very melodic. A few examples that come to mind of bands that inspired this approach are King Diamond and Hammers of Misfortune.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yeah. I went to college with Kris, and I was in another band (The Dread Crew of Oddwood) with Andre. Kris and Andre were (and still are) in another band called Platypus Egg together.

4. Each band member favourite band?

I'm not sure. I don't think I do.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I just like writing songs, so I go out of my way to find excuses to do it.

6. Where was your last gig?

I have no idea. Probably two years ago at this point. We did a couple of local shows to make sure all the new songs felt good. I think the last two shows were just opening for touring bands locally. Maggot Heart and Haunt, both of which are incredible bands.

7. Where would you like to act?

I'd love to do an Old Man Wizard TV series

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

I love doing music for multimedia things like movies or games, does that count? I also like contributing guest vocals or instruments to other recordings, really in any style.

9. Whom not?

Stuff I don't enjoy. I like most styles, but if I don't think a song is good I won't be motivated to work on it.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Sure. I got over stage fright by going to open mic nights a few times a week for months, just to get used to singing and playing in front of strangers. It's mainly just practice and confidence building.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I think the bands that probably made me most excited to play this type of music were Judas Priest, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, and Metallica. Since then, countless other bands, but those were the concerts I went to that made me think this stuff looked fun to do.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Probably something gross. Too many things for anything in particular to stick out.

13. What do you think of your fans?

99% overwhelmingly positive, and once in awhile someone will be creepy or gross. 14. What do you think of our site? To be honest, I don't know it very well. Most anything spreading underground music around is good though!

15. Something to add?

I hope your readers enjoy our new album! These are probably my favorite songs I've written so far.
