Interviews: SIYLIT

We have had the opportunity to interview the Thrash Metal/Death Metal band SIYLIT from Italy. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We were looking for a band name which was bearing hidden meaning. We were thinking about what was the strongest emotion that we wanted to transmit to the people listening to our music, and we said “It is nice when people SCREAM while we are playing….”. So we had the idea of the band name SIYLIT which is an acronym of a sentence which first word is “Scream”. We let our listeners to guess the other words of the sentence….

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We grew up listening to band as Sepultura, Pantera, Meshuggah, Slipknot, Korn but we don’t identify in a specific genre. We express ourselves composing fast, aggressive and groovy music. We also love to use odd metrics trying to keep the music flow fluid and sound. It also extremely important for us to keep each of our song with its identity. Of course, we listen and enjoy many other kind of music starting from jazz, which is essential for songwriting. Anyway, we love to be loud and heavy when we play our SIYLIT music!!!

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes, we are all long-time friends! We know each other since the 90s’, we played together in different bands and shared the stage in many occasions. It was really easy to join and form SIYLIT which has been like a sweet spot for our music attitude!

4. Each band member favourite band?

Very tough question. We have more than 20 bands each to mention here….if we have to choose ony one we can say Sepultura (Frank, voice), Meshuggah (Franza, guitar), Fates Warning (Paolo, drums), Metallica/Megadeth (Matteo G, bass) and Alice Cooper for me.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

As mentioned above we listen a wide range of music, and this is great inspiration for composing. Usually, we start from a guitar riff or a drum pattern, and then we assembly a first draft of a song. All the band members contribute to shaping the song and the metrics. Usually, the title and the lyrics are the last add-ons. The inspiration for our lyrics is essentially what we see and read about our society; for instance, our song PROPHETS OF HATE was inspired by politicians who use fear and ignorance to acquire power and consensus. Personal experiences were also in some cases source of inspiration, as in the case of BLOOD RED FAME (inspired by people we met who cannot accept to fail and do anything to overcome others) or HOLD BACK TIME (many of us are parents, and this song is about the fear of not being able to protect our sons and daughters when they will grow up).

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was in the north of Italy at the HABEMUS METALLUM festival in 2019, then due to COVID and due to time required to record DISINFORMATION PARADOX we stop live gigging, but we are ready to come back, we are going to announce soon the next tour dates.

7. Where would you like to act?

We love to play where we can meet metalheads that enjoy our music! If I have to choos a specific place, I never had the chance to play in London, so I would love to have a blasting gig over there!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are many great musicians that we would love to play with! It always a pleasure to share musical experience with talented music players, no matter if already famous or not.

9. Whom not?

We are really open minded!

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

No, when we are onstage we are in our comfort zone, since when we were kids. In order to overcome any stage fright, I think it is important to enjoy what you are going to play, having a lot of rehearsal in order to be confident with the setlist, and consider your band as a family!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

It would be a long list, I can mention Sepultura. Slipknot, Korn, Pantera but also bands which are only apparently more distant from our style as Motorhead or Black Sabbath.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Our fans are great! We never received a weird request!

13. What do you think of your fans?

I hope they enjoy our music as we do!

14. What do you think of our site?

It is a great tool which gives the chance the read and listen about some great new bands

15. Something to add?

Thanks for this interview! We have a new album DISINFORMATION PARADOX which has just been released by Volcano Records: you can find it on digital stores. We are extremely proud of our work and we want to share it with you!
