Interviews: Decerebration

We have had the opportunity to interview the Death Metal band Decerebration from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or come out just like that?

That’s a cool story. We started in early 1993 under the name Infest. We quickly were told that there was already a band called Infest and we decided to find another name. We had already released a demo under the name Infest, but we decided that the next release would be under a different name. We started brainstorming band names during practice. A bunch of names were suggested, and Decerebration was one of them. We had a show planned with Gorguts in October of 1993, but we hadn’t agreed on a name yet. During the middle of our set, the singer told the crowd that our new name was Decerebration without consulting the rest of the band beforehand. I’m sure the crowd saw the surprised looks on our faces.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

We listened to a lot of death metal back then. We were super into Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation and Death. We liked everything that had to do with death metal as well. So it was natural for us to choose to write death metal songs.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Olivier, Nicolas, and Julien were in a metal cover band before Decerebration. Once we decided that we wanted to write our own songs, we found a guitarist and a singer that were also looking to start a death metal band. The original singer didn’t stay very long in the band and was replaced shortly thereafter by Fudz. The core of Decerebration is the same as it was at eh beginning. Mathieu, a good friend of ours, stepped in to play bass with us.

4. Each band member favourite band?

We love a lot of death metal bands but we’ll list the ones that influenced us a lot at the beginning. Fudz Suffocation Julien Deicide Mathieu Cannibal Corpse Nicolas Death, Opeth (the first 10 years) Olivier Death

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Songs on “Follow the Scars” are about personal stuff that happened in our lives over the past 20 years. We wanted to write songs about that, it was a great source of inspiration. Otherwise, we get inspired by just jamming, getting a good guitar sound and start riffing!!

6. Where was your last gig?

At Les Katacombes in Montreal on November 19, 2019. We played with Kruhl, Archons and First Fragment. Then COVID fucked it up for everybody.

7. Where would you like to act?

By act do you mean somewhere special we would like to play? Then going back to the States or to Europe for a first time to play would be awesome for us. Otherwise, do as many shows as possible across Quebec and Canada!!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are too many bands that we would love to play with to list here. Older and newer bands too. If we could pick then I guess old school bands like Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse or Deicide.

9. Whom not?

We’re a very open-minded band. I don’t think there are any metal bands we would not play with really.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

The first shows we did when we started, we were nervous a lot!! I guess the first few shows when we came back as well. I’m not sure I’d call it stage fright but you’re nervous and eager to start the show. A little liquid courage (aka beer) is a good remedy for that!! Seriously, just practice; get tight as a band and you’ll be a lot less nervous.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I would say these four bands: Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Death, and Sepultura. We listened to a lot of other bands, but these are the ones that influenced us the most.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

I don’t remember anything super weird to be honest. I remember signing body parts but that’s about it haha.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love them!! Old school fans that like our early and new stuff, new fans we’re making now, they’re all awesome!! Metal fans are the best fans in music; there is no doubt about that.

14. What do you think of our site?

Pretty cool!! Lots of new bands to discover all in one place.

15. Something to add?

Thank you for having us on Breathing the Core!!
