Interviews: Sum Of Seven

This is a new interview with the Progressive Metal band Sum Of Seven from Finland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or came out just like that?

Well, we changed our name quite recently. We were originally named Sonus Corona but with the corona pandemic at hand, we decided to rebrand ourselves. So in the midst of us brainstorming for a new name Sum of Seven rose up and was selected. It implies that the output of our band is the result of something more than just the six members; a seventh element is needed so to speak. It has a nice level of mystery to it. But we did try to make this a definitive decision so we really did try to plan ahead.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We all have a history of enjoying music from a wide range of genres but for us the progressive end of the spectrum is what we have grown to like the most. Maybe it is the way progressive music challenges the listener more than mainstream genres. The first progressive album that I listened to was “Metropolis pt.II Scenes From A Memory” by Dream Theater. That really blew my mind. I was like: You can do that? And from there on I fell in love with the genre.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

We have all known each other from various connections from before but we have really become friends through the band.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Ari: Soilwork

Miika: Pagans Mind

Rasmus: Dream Theater

Harri: Marillion

Marko: Toto

Esa: System of a Down.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I personally draw inspiration from the so called human condition. The way we struggle triumph and persevere is just mindboggling.

6. Where was your last gig?

In our hometown Turku in a venue called “Silver Moon”. I think it was in 2020.

7. Where would you like to act?

Well worldwide would be the obvious answer. But it would be awesome to tour in Latin America someday. Some amazing food and amazing people there!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Dream Theater built the foundations and paved the way to where the modern progressive metal genre is today so it would be awesome to play with them. To play with Devin Townsend, Haken, Marillion, Pagans Mind and Circus Maximus would be a pleasure also.

9. Whom not?

No one really springs into mind

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Stage fright, no, not really. It is always exciting and there is a bit of pressure when you play live but that is what makes you perform at your best. The way to beat your fears is to face them. Rehearse your act together and play more gigs.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Probably Dream Theater, Soilwork, and Haken. But in all honesty, I pretty much draw inspiration from all genres of music I listen to and I’m proud of it. There is just so much good music out there regardless of genre.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Can’t really think of anything here...

13. What do you think of your fans?

Fans are absolutely amazing. People are excited about the music you create. They are empowering. To play live in a packed venue and see the excitement in their eyes, that experience is like nothing else. Fans are the driving force.

14. What do you think of our site?

The site is awesome!

15. Something to add?

Stay safe stay tuned and stay prog!
