Interviews: EKOA

This is a new interview with the Progressive Death Metal band EKOA from Poland. Check out the interview and follow the artist on his FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, plan it, or came out just like that?

PAUL: The name of the band is partly life experience and the rejection that we once experienced. It means EKOA in one of the languages, probably African if I remember correctly. After some time, I also noticed that EKOA is the material from which the guitars are made, so our background on the cover is bark, everything fits together nicely

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

PAUL: This genre is a bit of a mix-up of all our influences. From death metal to prog with a little bit of melody. We find it powerful, catchy and emotional what was really important. Music can’t be only a hails of sounds, it must bring emotions.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

KAMIL: No, we found each other on the internet and we fit perfectly. It’s really nice to have so lucky.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

PAUL: For all of us the same I guess, so: Opeth, Gojira, Mastodon, Katatonia, and probably a few others. But as you can hear our genre is somewhere between these bands.

KAMIL: Death!

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

TOM: For lyrics, I like to go deep into introspection and philosophical questions. I am also interested in science and the relationship humans have with it.

PAUL: Well, all of us have always some kind of emotions and when you feel this day, you are taking the guitar to your hand and it’s like a lightning, comes automatically, you don’t control it.

6. Where was your last gig?

KAMIL: So far the most gigs we played on our native ground in Cracow, so due to the fact is our first year of playing together on stage, we are trying to play for our local fans.

7. Where would you like to act?

SERGIO: We truly believe that big stages and festivals are our future, we are ready for that. High motivations give us much power to work and never give up to achieve it.

KAMIL: Definitely on open-air festivals.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

PAUL: No limit here, for sure is many bands with which we would like to have a tour or just single support. But I guess that our favorite bands which I said before.

KAMIL: Not aiming high, but Metallica would be nice, haha! But staying on the ground, every band, which is better than us.

9. Whom not?

PAUL: .. none types J

KAMIL: Whoever disappoints us.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

TOM: I still kinda have it but because a lot of friends are usually coming to the gigs, I feel like I'm playing for them. Also, I'm kinda introverted so speaking in public can be a bit hard at times, so I sometimes prepare in advance mental notes with a few sentences or a few things I want to say about certain songs or about the venue. It makes things more comfortable if it's a bit scripted in my mind.

KAMIL: I get stage fright mostly when I worry about being behind schedule or if the gear won't give up on me. Thenk I try to find some quiet place (not so easy on a metal gig) and put everything into perspective. In the end, believing in your own self is the most important, as well as being able to take all adversities with a smile. This attitude works best for calming the nerves. Besides, I lose all stress when I start playing. Proverbially, a drop becomes the ocean by falling into it.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

PAUL: Opeth and Gojira for the prog riffs TOM: the growls, the complexity of the arrangements, and the wonder. Katatonia for the emotion, the darkness, and the voice.

KAMIL: Definitely the aforementioned two, also Opeth and Behemoth.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

SERGIO: Fortunately our fans have no stupid ideas yet.

13. What do you think of your fans?

KAMIL: I'm very grateful to them. As a starting band, it is amazing to hear that some people enjoy our music. I've met a few of them and it's always a warm feeling listening to what they have to say about our music.

14. What do you think of our site?

SERGIO: For sure you are working actively and your experience is big, so we are happy that we had a chance to cooperate with you

15. Something to add?

PAUL: Thanks for the nice interview and I would like to thank our fans for all, be sure that we are getting better for you.
