Interviews: Truth & Tragedy

This is a new interview with the Post-Hardcore/Melodic Hardcore band Truth & Tragedy from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the artist on his FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band's name?

Our first idea for the band name was actually ‘Triumph & Tragedy’, inspired by lyrics in the song ‘Aftermath’ by The Ghost Inside. But after a few beers and some debating, we finally settled on ‘Truth & Tragedy’.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Well, our singer Aaron has been screaming his whole life, and often reminds us about his glory days in high school back in North Carolina, crowd-surfing and being crowned winner of the battle of the bands! Freddy (guitar) has always loved hardcore, and Kai (guitar) is a huge metalcore fan, so it was quite natural for us to settle into post-hardcore, which allows us to flip between subgenres. Vitali (bass) is actually more into jazz, but we reeled him into the band, and now he’s headbanging better than all of us. Domi (drums) has a more alt-rock background, but he’s a really versatile player and will look for any excuse to get on stage and bash some cymbals!

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Truth & Tragedy actually formed as a duo (with Aaron on lyrics/vocals and Freddy writing the music) back in September 2020, right in the middle of Covid restrictions. These two were already in another band together, but Covid meant that band couldn’t meet up to practice, so we ended up creating Truth & Tragedy as a two-man side project to get around the rules! But suddenly T&T gained momentum, and once the world started opening up for live shows again, we needed musicians! So Freddy approached Kai, Vitali, and Domi, who he knew privately and already knew as amazing musicians, and now we’re the 5-piece we are today!

4. Each band member’s favorite band?

It’s a tough question, but we think we’ve managed to narrow it down! Thankfully we don’t need to agree... Aaron - To Kill Achilles (my favorite band, and hugely influential in our music). Domi - Blink 182 (no explanation needed!). Vitali - Linkin Park (because that shit slaps!). Freddy - Bring Me The Horizon (they master literally every subgenre of metal). Kai - Intervals (metalcore to perfection). Truth & Tragedy Press 31.05.2022

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Just about anything, to be honest! Sometimes it’s just music or lyrics that come to one of us in the middle of the night, or while we’re out and about. Other times, we’re inspired by something we’ve seen or heard elsewhere in the music we listen to - whether that be within our genre, or totally unrelated: Aaron, for example, loves old country and western, and basically wrote his own hardcore gunslinger ballad in our track ‘Carcass’. People also inspire us in our music - our track ‘Neo’ on our newly released EP ‘Blood on Blood’ is Freddy’s tribute to his newborn son. In fact we released the EP on Neo’s first birthday this year on May 24th! We also write some songs because we want to see if we can - ‘Burn The Witch’ was our first spin on pop-punk, and we were so pleased with it, we keep going back for more! And (very) occasionally, we write songs for purely superficial reasons. Freddy had his eye on a Mustang for ages, but the only way he could spin it with his lady was if he claimed it was for a music video. So we wrote and filmed our single ‘Kelvin’s Not A Rockstar Yet’, and Freddy got his day in a Mustang.

6. Where was your last gig?

We just played at an amazing and infamous venue called Stattbahnhof in Schweinfurt, Germany, at their newcomer festival ‘First Act Night’. This venue hosts some of the greats of our genre, and it was an honor to be invited to play there and act stupid on stage!

7. Where would you like to perform?

Somewhere random, like Malta or something! We are so lucky to be in Germany, a total hub for hardcore - but it would be amazing to travel out to somewhere we would never have thought of and try to crack into their underground scene. We’re also keeping an eye on the crazy underground scene in Greece, which would be fucking awesome to jump into!

8. Whom would you like to perform with?

We’d love to perform with To Kill Achilles. We all love this band, and we’ve actually been really fortunate to be in contact with them before. Basically, if we get the word, we’ll be there!

9. Whom not?

There’s no one we wouldn’t tour with! We’d even open for Nickelback. In fact, we really like Nickelback. We love Nickelback and only want to tour with them. Give us a call Chad, we love you. Truth & Tragedy Press 31.05.2022

10. Have Any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Domi, our drummer, had stage fright. He still has stage fright. He has no answers.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

To Kill Achilles, of course, but also Being As An Ocean and Casey are hugely influential in our style of music. But now that you ask, that’s actually pretty recent, in the grand scheme of things. If we really think back, like most musicians, it’s the greats like Bon Jovi, Freddy Mercury, and Dio that really had us rocking in our diapers.

12. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you?

It might not be the strangest thing, but it was definitely the most infuriating. At our latest show, some asshole came over trying to haggle us down on our merch prices, then shouted abuse at us after the show when we wouldn’t budge. Fucking crazy. Merch is a band’s main (and sometimes only!) source of income, and we spend our own money on designs, production and transport - then this total nobhead comes along acting like we owe him something! Then he’s probably the one shouting loudest that other people should “support the scene”. Crazy, rude, and a total no-go.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love ‘em. And we want to meet as many of them as we can in our EU Tour this September/October! Check our socials for a city near you and come hang out with us!

14. What do you think of our site?

You guys are doing god’s work, seriously. It’s hard to find people who are just generally passionate about the scene, and who provide a platform for upcoming bands to gain exposure and share their art. We, as a band, appreciate what you do, and we’re sure your readers feel the same.

15. Something to add?

Just thanks as always for support, and please reach out to us - we’d love to hear from you! Till then, you can find all our music, videos, links, news and merch on truthandtragedy.com, or you can go directly using the links below! Cheers! Much love, T&T
