Interviews: Elf Queen

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Heathen Rock band, Elf Queen from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or came out just like that?

Uncle Hauk: well, when I first worked with Kelsey she was wearing an Elf costume, so that theme sort of stuck.

Kelsey: There were a few concepts that floated around, but after we came up with our backstory, it had to be Elf Queen.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Uncle Hauk: We make music. We take from many different genres, whatever speaks to us. If it fits the song, we use it. I do love heavy guitars, but also folk and electronic and classical feelings. A little of this, a little of that.

Kelsey: I like this genre because there’s so much flexibility with it. There isn’t just one thing that makes it unique and I like that we can play with different additives. Flutes here, cello there, heavy riffs, drum solos! The possibilities are truly endless.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Uncle Hauk: yes, we worked together on a fantasy holiday show and had a ton of fun together!

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Uncle Hauk: of all time? New Model Army or Skyclad. Possibly Guns N Roses. Hard to pick one absolute favorite. I love the classical, metal, and country- everything from Black Sabbath to Megadeth to Bach and Beethoven.

Kelsey: I have such an eclectic taste in music I don’t think I could pick just one. I grew up listening to Reba and Garth Brooks, was introduced to Brittney and the Boy bands of the era, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Beastie Boys, of course, you can’t discount Queen, or ol’ Blue Eyes himself. I could go on.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Uncle Hauk: everything. Life, death, love, dragons, folklore, women (especially women). Really anything is fair game. Our last album Requiem was written right after my fiance died. It was brutal to take those feelings and try and make something beautiful out of them. I couldn't have done it without Kelsey.

Kelsey: It’s truly an honor to sing the songs Hauk has written for the Requiem. I look forward to writing more songs from our souls.

Uncle Hauk: I’m hoping the songs we’re working on right now will be more collaborative. It’ll be easier as the pandemic eases off to get together and really thrash out some new works.

6. Where was your last gig?

Uncle Hauk: We played the Maui Sugar Mill in the spring, but have been focusing on the Requiem. We're aiming to play all over. I was just at Wacken, and that's a bucket list item right there.

7. Where would you like to act?

Uncle Hauk: act? Or perform music? I've dabbled in acting but don't really consider myself an actor. For music, I want to play for the whole world. Anytime, any place.

Kelsey: I’m already an actor. I’ve been on the stage since a very young age, but I’m trying to make the transition into film and television. Maybe one fame will serve the other.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Uncle Hauk: touring wise? Or recording? There's so many artists. I'd love to record with Lydia Loveless, Skyclad, New Model Army, and more. Touring- big female fronted bands like Halestorm. Or do a crazy fantasy tour with Windrose and other epic bands like that.

Kelsey: YES! Halestorm would be a dream! Honestly, I’m game to tour with anyone who will have us.

9. Who not?

Uncle Hauk: I mean…. I can't stand Florida Georgia Line. Worst band ever. But…. If they paid us to open for them, we’d make a point to absolutely own the stage.

Kelsey: I don’t know there are many bands I wouldn’t tour or work with, personally, but there’s always room on my shit list.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Uncle Hauk: sometimes. Not as much recently. The older I get, the fewer fucks I give. You just lean into that first note and first riff and just enjoy the moment.

Kelsey: I absolutely do. I am a perfectionist and if I don’t feel like I’ve truly perfected what we’re performing, I get very nervous. But, the sooner you remember that the crowd is there FOR you and to support you, the sooner you’ll forget that you were scared in the first place. Just go out and rock faces.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Uncle Hauk: great melodies and great lyrical messages. A song has to make you feel, and feel on many different levels. All-time favorite songs include GNR’s Estranged, Skyclad’s Well Traveled Man, and New Model Army's Winter. I also listen to a ton of classical music. Beethoven, Faure, Bach, all good stuff.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Uncle Hauk: to come to their house after a show and do a 2nd concert.

Kelsey: That is odd. Nothing from me so far, but there was a cool experience at our first life where we got invited to a karaoke party after the show! That was a blast.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Uncle Hauk: love them!

Kelsey: We are always looking for more people to join my kingdom and aid us in the revolution!

14. What do you think of our site?

Uncle Hauk: looks good- I'm going to spend some time there looking for new bands. I'm always looking for new music to buy!

15. Something to add?

Uncle Hauk: thank you for spreading the word of Elf Queen! We're looking forward to sharing our music with the world!

Kelsey: Hail to the Queen!
