Interviews: We Are William

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metalcore/Djent/Progressive Metal band, We Are William from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The band name comes from the movie "A Knight's Tale" with Heath Ledger (William). In the movie, William's father tells little William that any man "can change his stars" when little William tells his father that one day he wishes to be a Knight. We know this industry takes grit. We know it takes time. It also takes levity. William rolls with the punches in the film. His "why" supersedes any adversity. This is something we really admire and want to embody as we grow.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

It's a genre where it's acceptable to express the darker realms of feeling. It's raw. It can swell and crash, while at the same time being soft and introspective. And we feel that the catharsis it offers is important. We need to be able to work through tough emotions, as well as enjoy the lighter ones when the dust settles.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Cameron and Max played in bands in the past and knew each other from their reputation in the local metal scene. Cameron and Sebastian met through a mutual friend and shared the same passion for music. Eventually, Sebastian came to lean into the metal scene and jumped in head first. Mack was introduced to Cameron through Andrew Kim of Inferi. Mack and Fernando knew each other through the Saint Louis metal scene, which lead to Fernando eventually joining William.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Cameron: Tesseract

Sebastian: Frightened Rabbit

Mack: Cynic

Max: Rivers of Nihil

Fernando: Slice The Cake

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

The need for connectedness. A lot of our writing dives into ideas of grief, struggle, isolation, and those other taboo human experiences. These things can be hard to talk about in a general sense. The music creates a way to share these experiences.

6. Where was your last gig?

Aethereus, Ominous Ruin, Illucinous (8/10/22) Trailside Saloon

7. Where would you like to Play?

The Royal Albert hall. And of course, Red Rocks.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Sam Carter (Architects)

9. Whom not?

Chris Barnes (6 Feet Under)

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Everyone gets the pre-show jitters. It comes with the territory. Practice makes confidence though. Do something until it's second nature and the thinking tends to leave the equation. We also have a really strong team. It makes it easy to feel confident in a live setting when you really trust the people you're working with.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Tesseract, Cynic, System of a Down, River of Nihil, Slice The Cake, and Depeche Mode

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

An autograph on the bewbs.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love them.

14. What do you think of our site?

We really like what you’ve done with the place *Look around in John Travolta*.

15. Something to add?

Come see us on tour this Winter if we are playing in a city near you!
