Interviews: Swept To Sea

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Melodic Metalcore/Metalcore band Swept To Sea from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. What is your name and what do you do in the band?

My name is Sean Kameny and I play bass in Swept to Sea.

2. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

That same day we formed the band, we more or less knew that we wanted to commit that day. That being said we all prepared a list of names we thought would be fitting. Probably about an hour later and after a struggle to decide on the perfect name we could all agree on, we finally decided Swept to Sea conveyed the emotions/imagery we wanted to show our audience. The turbulence of the ocean can be seen in our music and being swept to sea really gives a dark feeling that everyone endures at one point or another in life, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a light at the end of that tunnel.

3. Why did you want to play this genre?

We wanted to play metalcore because it’s the genre that we all grew up listening to. Probably the first type of metal that we were exposed to growing up. I remember when I was first really getting into music and my Dad would take me to this store in the Bay Area called Rasputin Music. They would have aisles and aisles of metal CDs on clearance. Found so many bands from that like Bleeding Through, Poison The Well, Norma Jean, etc.

4. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

I met Jeno (lead guitar) and Gabe ( Drums) in high school. But I didn’t meet Jeno’a brother Gio (guitar) and Ernesto (vocals) until the band formed.

5. Each band member's favorite band?

I know Jeno and Gio are heavily influenced by Children Of Bodom. Gabe’s favorite band has to be Ice Nine Kills for sure. Ernesto’s favorite band would probably be Hatebreed. And for me, I don’t think I can pick just one so I will give you 3 haha. Has to be Bleeding Through, Machine Head, and Gojira.

6. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I don’t know that I can pinpoint something that inspires me to write. Usually, an idea will come at random and I just build off of that. I’ve never really thought about what triggers the idea. I will say my family has always been extremely supportive of my pursuit of music so that’s always been behind me when writing.

7. Where was your last gig?

We last played at the X-Bar in Cupertino, California with our friends in Embrium, Hounds of Innsmouth, Deliria, and Valensorow. What a party that night was!

8. Where would you like to act?

I think we all would love to play at one of the European metal festivals one day. Bloodstock, Wacken, Download, Donnington any of them would be a dream come true. So if anyone involved in booking for any of those is reading this, hit us up! Haha

9. Whom would you like to feature with?

I would love to share the stage with Machine Head or even be in a song! They were one of the first live shows I had been to and it blew my mind the level of energy and showmanship they bring to a show.

10. Whom not?

I don’t think there is anyone I wouldn’t agree to play with. Haha. I’m just happy doing what I love doing! And if anyone liked it enough to have us with them, even better!

11. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Personally, I haven’t had stage fright. Once the intro track begins it’s like everything else is gone and it’s just us and some lights. I do still get nervous before our set starts for sure but, I feel like that just means I still love it and want to make sure I have the best performance possible. You have to use those nerves and turn them into adrenaline for your performance.

12. What bands have inspired you the most?

Disturbed and Slipknot were definitely early inspirations for me. Some of the first metal music I had ever listened to and still do to this day. Bleeding Through and Machine Head definitely influenced my writing and playing styles more than anyone else.

13. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

A fan asked our drummer if he had any of his favorite snacks, frozen popcorn. Haha, make sure you check out the 10 questions series on our youtube channel so you can understand that reference!

14. What do you think of your fans?

Our fans are the greatest! Marisa is notable for sure! She always shows up for us and is always super excited when we’re playing! Of course our families as well! Special shout-out to Mike Mannagia for always stirring up a conversation on our Music Videos on YouTube too!
