Interviews: Shadow Smile

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Heavy Metal band, Shadow Smile from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it, or came out just like that?

It came from a song by The Cure, the lyric is ‘Just paint your face and shadows smile’. We thought it sounded cool so called ourselves ‘Shadow Smile’.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Metal and hard rock are really in our DNA, we were all raised on rock music and, while we do incorporate other genres and influences into our music, we will always make heavy, aggressive music of some description.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Me (Connor, vocals) and Joe (drums) had worked together in a band before and knew each other from the Yorkshire metal scene. Adam (guitar) and Ethan (bass) came to the band from ads but we quickly bonded and became like family.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Honestly, it’s too close to call. Our influences range so much, everything from Queen and Guns N Roses to Bring Me the Horizon, Ghost, and Avenged Sevenfold right through to 80s pop and 90s hip-hop.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Usually, there will be something on a societal level such as the pandemic, cancel culture, intolerance, or a big social change but sometimes it’s purely for the sake of entertainment and writing a good song.

6. Where was your last gig?

We played our last show of 2022 at Winter Rocks Festival in Sheffield, UK.

7. Where would you like to act?

Donnington for Download Festival would be a dream come true.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Brian May, Adam Ant, and Alanis Morisette

9. Whom not?

Anyone uncreative. I wouldn’t name and shame but there’s a lot of generic stuff going on in metal.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Definitely, when we started I think we’ve all been through that. Bigger crowds are much easier for me than small ones. I always used to perform in the back of the room as an ‘imaginary person’ and ignore the crowd but I think the more comfortable you become the more you can engage people. It’s one of those things that just needs practice and commitment to overcome.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Avenged Sevenfold, Ghost, Queen, Guns N Roses. Limitless ambition and amazing stagecraft.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Probably not appropriate or P.C. to print! We’ve definitely had some weird ones. I still find it strange when people want merch and CDs signed, it fried my brain that they care so much but it means the world.

13. What do you think of your fans?

They are the most dedicated and supportive community we could ask for. It’s like a big family and they get to know each other and bond over shared interests. I know every band says it but they are the best fans in the world.

14. What do you think of our site?

I think it’s awesome. I love that you feature new bands and go in-depth on underground albums.

15. Something to add?

Thank you for talking with us and look out for our debut album in Spring 2023!
