Interviews: Matianak

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Black Metal band, Matianak from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

I was looking for a simple band name that is one word. Has a good meaning. And that sounds evil. I'm really into mythology and started searching different folklore of different countries. I made a list of a few to see if any are taken. I looked in the Indonesian folklore names and saw the name pontianak which also is known as matianak which means the death of a child the folklore is about a woman that died from stillbirth that turns into a vampiric crazy witch and I felt that I represent that insanity on stage. The name also sounds evil and catchy and decided that will be the perfect band name.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Since a young child, I was always into dark imagery. Dark music. Creatures and characters And I had such a good connection with black metal. It is a soothing feeling and enjoys the freedom to express it and scare the crap out of people. I am also into horror and enjoy the reaction I get and just learn to always love this genre. There are so many variations and styles and love how diverse it can be.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

No. For the most part, they have been either fans of my band before or wanted to join a band.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

I'm a vocalist and I have a lot of favorite bands but Watain is one of my favorites. Drummer is mainly into electronic dance music and death metal, grindcore, and hardcore style metal. Both guitar players are into a variety of metal bands and black metal bands my main guy is a big influence in dissection, emperor, and watain that you can hear in the riffs. My bass player is pretty much open to a variety as well and about the same bands too.

My inspiration is personal life stories and the human mind. I am highly intrigued by how insane humans can be and what they are capable of. It is a crazy world out there

6. Where was your last gig?

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

I'm sure everyone gets nervous but I probably have the worst stage fright and I'm the vocalist. Haha! Usually being a different character that isn't me helps. I have these white contacts that kind of blinds me so I can't really see the crowd too much. I don't think it ever goes away. Just give it your all. Pretend you are at your rehearsal spot. Engage and have fun. Channel everything you feel out and don't think about it. I usually look up and such and enjoy people's reactions. Never be afraid. Just give it all you got. It does feel great expressing all your emotions and life turmoil you.

Watain especially due to their amazing shows and stage decor and stage presence. Anaal nathrakh due to the insanity of the variety of vocals and genres.
