Interviews: Nihilist Death Cult

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Death Metal/Grindcore/Punk band, Nihilist Death Cult from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

I wanted something more extreme than what I have used in the past… I wanted something to reflect my views, I have a mostly nihilistic view of everything… I wanted something with power and a feeling of community for like-minded types, as you would find in a “cult” or a “tribe”.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Honestly, I didn’t even think of where would NDC fit in, I wanted to play something specific, which is the hardcore punk sound from 82-86… without any regard to what today's punk climate is like… it was very focused and very pure with a very limited amount of influences and only the most relentless of styles were going to be played.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes of course, the band was started by my self and my brother John on drums… initially, I wrote 5 songs and sent the demo tracks to him and he was into it right away… and honestly, if he didn’t want to do it, it probably would have never happened… but we were in the first version of Soulstorm together, and so was Rick Kowalski, Ethan and John were in Abyss together and I’ve known Ethan for last 30 years as well but we were never in a band together before.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Well, I can’t really speak for everyone and it would take some time to get that answer from everyone but at our last rehearsal we were talking about how much we love and how amazing Bad Brains’ Rock For Light is… and it really is one of the main bands NDC was modelled after… along with Poison Idea.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Moods, vibes, atmospheres… for NDC, I try not to stray too far from the sound because that was the whole point of doing this… words like maturity and progression, these are just buzz words and some writers fall into those traps, depending on the expectations… follow most bands and you will hear their second album gets a little softer, a little slower, oh now there’s an acoustic part… that’s not for me… NDC will always be fast and relentless amps on 10! That’s what inspires me, the heavy, fast hardcore… the stuff you heard from around 82-86… with obviously lots of metal in the writing, like crossover but better and current

6. Where was your last gig?

The first show we played at The Hard Luck Bar in Toronto, was before the album was out and nobody ever heard one note from us and we were received very well, so I knew we were onto something cool… then about a week after the album release we played the Hard Luck Bar again with Korrosive and Of Hatred Spawn and that was just a killer night for Toronto bands… it’s great to be out playing as that is the ultimate litmus test of how it goes over and if ppl like it…

7. Where would you like to act?

We would love to tour Europe and the US… I think the style we play would connect with a lot of ppl into metal music cuz it’s so direct and doesn’t rely on any gimmicks… plus it’s so fast and relentless it conveys all the emotion you would expect from extreme metal music

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Would love to tour with lots of bands… Infernal War, Voidhanger, Azarath… would be cool if Bad Brains were still around or if a new Nails album comes out… would be awesome if Torture Division was still around.

9. Whom not?

We’re not really interested in playing with bands outside of the metal spectrum… we would probably fit in and do well with most of the metal subgenres.

10. Have any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Yes, of course, there’s been times for sure… I think the only thing you can do is to do it, be it… be the person you want to become… if you wanna get up there then do it and not just by the numbers… every fibre of your being should want to be there, you owe it to a paying audience.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I’ve found inspiration in tons of different styles of music, Bad Brains is always a huge one for us, the energy, and the attitude.

12. What do you think of your fans?

Absolutely love all the fans who have supported us.

14. What do you think of our site?

Looks, killer! Thanks for the support, truly appreciate it!
