Interviews: YAKI DAH

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band, YAKI DAH from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

When trying to decide on a name we really wanted to pull from our Welsh heritage, after searching through old Welsh mythology books and literature we wanted our name to bring a feeling of warmth and bring a smile to any who hear it. Then we finally landed on YAKI DAH, we really liked it - we felt it invites people to learn more about the Welsh language, the actual Welsh phrase and spelling are “Iechyd Da” - a toast to good health, we thought this way we can invite a lot more people into the world of Welsh culture, at least that is the hope whilst gaining fans along the way.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We sat together when we first met and realized that we all enjoyed different genres of music and that we should pull them all together and fuse them to create our own unique sound and twist on modern genres - that’s why each song Has its own quality and is different. Still, you will always know it’s Yaki Dah. “Hard-hitting edgy blues with a snapping punk rock bite”.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

The band first formed in February of 2022, Christian (vocals) and Francesco (drums) met online after searching for like-minded musicians. Jack Williams (guitar) had been on the local music scene for a number of years alongside Christian where they had played a number of gigs together in previous projects and they had formed a strong friendship through this. After recruiting Williams for the band, the search turned to a bass player. Jack Williams and Jack Lee (bass) have been friends since they first met each other in school and have formed a lifelong connection ever since. Jack Lee had even initially taught Williams to play guitar in the early days and Lee to our surprise was ecstatic to join the band and adapt to playing the bass despite being a guitarist first and foremost.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Christian - Bring Me The Horizon

Jack Lee - Black Sabbath

Jack Williams - tie up between Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath

Francesco - Led Zeppelin and The Doors (Fran was very insistent that it’s both)

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

We feel we write freely and creatively - we all have different influences and listen to various music genres so firmly believe that creating a sound that is unique to us is important. There are very clear influences and similarities in our music to other bands of course - but we have our own twist and energy.

6. Where was your last gig?

The Bunkhouse, Swansea - 09.12.22 supporting our friends ZAC & THE NEW MEN

7. Where would you like to play?

We would love to play anywhere and everywhere in the world that we realistically can, we want to share our music with as many people as we can and every show is an opportunity to reach potential new fans.

8. Who would you like to support?

As we’ve mentioned above, we see all shows as an opportunity to grow as a band who are still in our early stages - however, the obvious bands we’d love to support being based in Wales would be Holding Absence, Those Damn Crows or Funeral For A Friend. If we’re looking bigger and further afield the dream would be to support someone like Clutch or Queens Of The Stone Age.

9. Who not?

No one - we are happy to play with any band and support them, we believe in the power of supporting every band along the way, independent grassroots music is incredibly important and as we’ve said above we see any show opportunity as a potential to grow.

10. Have any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Despite the rest of the band all playing gigs for over 10 years collectively, for myself (Jack Lee) this is my first ever band and opportunity to play live. To be honest, it was extremely tough trying to beat stage fright for our debut show but my tip for anyone just starting out would be just to enjoy it - make the most of it, your first gig will fly by, and 30 minutes pass within what feels like the blink of an eye and realistically no one knows if you make a small mistake, when you’re a new band and play all originals - no one in the crowd knows your songs well enough yet to notice small errors when first played, just try not to get inside your head and go with the flow, when that first note hits you will feel the adrenaline rush and give it your all.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Bring Me The Horizon, Wolfmother, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and The Doors.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Jack Lee’s pair of crocs - you’ll never see him without them, we even jokingly get called “croc rock” by a few of our friends.

13. What do you think of your fans?

The fans mean literally everything to us - they feel us in a way that is unexplainable, the connection and energy we share with our crowd when we play live shows are honestly Immense and the atmosphere in the room is always electric.

14. What do you think of our site?

We think Breathing the core is great! From what you guys do for upcoming artists to how great and welcoming your interviews are! This is our first time (and hopefully not our last) having the pleasure to speak with you guys, but collectively we have heard countless great things about you over the years and appreciate the effort you go into getting new bands like ours heard and seen by a new audience.

15. Something to add?

We would just like to take this opportunity to thank all our friends, fans, family, etc who have supported us in the last year and since our live debut back in August. Please keep with us into this new year! We'd also like to mention the venue owners and promoters we’ve had the privilege of working with, without them we wouldn't have a music scene at all! Make sure you stream out the new single “Do Me Wrong” - available worldwide from 17/02/23 via all major streaming platforms and music videos on YouTube.
