Interviews: Scum Giant

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Doom Metal/Stoner Metal/Sludge Metal band, Scum Giant from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or did it came out just like that?

The name comes from an episode of Lost In Space...There Were Giants In The Earth.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Dan: There's nothing as badass as playing a heavy, sludgy, doomy, stoner riff on my V.

DAVE: Because it’s slow enough that I can actually play the drums.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Since college. Dave is the one who gave me a kick and got me to start doing my own vocals on the stuff I was writing. Then we became a thrash-writing team.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Dan: Corrosion of Conformity.

Dave: Do I get only one? Hmm. I’ll go with Vio-Lence. I have to say Lil Yachty’s new album "Let’s Start Here" is a surprising and amazing psych-rock treat.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I watch TONS of classic horror, and piles of unsavory documentaries, and I don't like very many people. The title of the EP, Space Vampire, is actually an idea for a song that I have brewing in my brain. Maybe it'll be on the next work that we release.

6. Where was your last gig?

Dan: Until this EP, I was a one-man band. I didn't gig, and I prefer home recording anyway.

Dave: My last gig was at Love Burn in Miami.

7. Where would you like to act?

Dan: In a horror film with Boris, Bela, Christopher, or Peter.

Dave: I’m all over TikTok.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Dan: Do you mean jam with? Pepper Keenan.

Dave: Anyone who pushes boundaries.

9. Whom not?

Dan: Any current pop or country star.

Dave: I’m far more forgiving. I’ll play with anyone as long as it’s fun.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright?

Dan: Still do. Dave: I’m a total attention whore. I’ll perform anything, anywhere, regardless of what I’m wearing or how I’m feeling. I don’t fucking care! I need that dopamine rush!

11. Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

DAN: Ummm, no. LOL.

Dave: Perform relatively sober. We all love weed, but it’s terrible for stage fright. And don’t take things too seriously. Something you think is a mistake because you played it differently than you do in practice might sound like a virtuosic flourish to the crowd. The energy you put out to the crowd comes back to you tenfold!

12. What bands have inspired you the most?

Dan: Black Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity, Electric Wizard, Kyuss, Monolord, Dopelord, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, Mars Red Sky, QOTSA, ZZ Top, old Kiss, Trouble, Down, Sasquatch, Monster Magnet, Sleep, Witchfinder General.

Dave: I’m a bit more genre-agnostic, but as a producer, I usually hone in on mathy bands with creative production. Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Clowncore, The Locust, Machine Head, Melt Banana, Marc Rebillet, Tame Impala, Varnaline.

13. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

In the middle of a set, a guy wanted to plug his electric bongos into my mixer to play along with me. I just pretended I couldn’t hear him.

14. What do you think of your fans?

They’re the scummiest!

15. What do you think of our site?

Breathing The Core has all the deep cuts. There’s so much here and it’s such a gift to the scene.

16. Something to add?

Check out Fuzznukl and Squachek. And Giant Robot from Walla Walla too. I (meaning “Dave”) used to have a metal interview series on YouTube called Johnny Orlando Jr.’s Antibiotic Resistant Metal Show, so you might dig some of the insane interviews I did with some of my favorite metal bands.
