Interviews: Soleil noiR

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band, Soleil noiR from France. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Dam: So we come from a quite sunny country on the shores of the mediterranean sea, a little town on the french riviera called St-Raphaël ad we wanted to bring this life reality into the name of the band. At the same time, our lyrics can be very deep and are inspired by french poets. There is this poem, "El Desdichado" from Gérard de Nerval, a writer and poet of the XIXth century in France, that says : "…Ma seule étoile est morte et mon luth constellé porte le soleil noir de la mélancolie..." Soleil noiR means black sun and we thought this would be the perfect fit to represent who we are, where we come from, and what we carry within our story. So yeah, that's us, we're Soleil noiR 🙂

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Niko: We did not really think of playing any specific genre when we started music together in the 90s. We were way too excited and also beginners to think of such things as these. We just knew we wanted to do our thing. So we started to play and kept every idea as open as possible. The addition of the didgeridoo came naturally as Dam was already playing this instrument for fun. When he met his Aboriginal adoption family in Australia, everything changed in his ability to play and it became obvious it would be part of our music for good.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Seub: Sure we did, we were already friends at school and shared passion for rock and live music, as well as getting in trouble together most of the time 😂. Honestly, playing music when we were not at school just took us out of the street and out of more trouble. We're grateful for that.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Dam: Smashing pumpkins

Seub: Nirvana

Niko: can't choose, I love so many bands!!!

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Dam: huge influence from the Pixies for me in the way of rhythmic and lead guitar, and as I write lyrics it's about everything that connects us all, I like using "you" and "we" to share those stories as we believe they belong to anyone who's gonna listen to it eventually.

Seub: I love Smashing Pumpkins and their melancholic melodies. It has impacted my way of playing bass in a very positive way.

Niko: ATDI and Sparta drummer Tony Hajjar has brought something else at the time I was working at expanding my horizons with the drums. Love the way he keeps everything simple but essential at the same time.

6. Where was your last gig?

Niko: just nearby our hometown last week! It was a very nice show that gave us the opportunity to reconnect with old mates and also meet a whole new generation of live addicts like us.

7. Where would you like to act?

Dam: let's dream big! I keep wondering how the didgeridoo would sound at Red Rocks. Man this place is just amazing ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Dam: Smashing pumpkins!

Seub: Interpol

Niko: Anyone who's up for some good time playing music together!

9. Whom not?

Seub: We love music way too much to lose any opportunity. We just wanna play, all the time, the more on stage the better!

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Dam: Oh man it's a constant fight. It's just part of the game. I guess through the years you just learn how to compose with that and not fight against it anymore. So here is the tip: accept that it's a natural process, it will always be there and it's actually a good thing as it will challenge you in a good way, making you a better version of yourself every time and keep you humble and happy to be on stage, cause live music is everything ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Niko: Like we said already, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies, Sparta, Interpol, but also tons of indie bands like us who share night after night the same passion for music and for the stage.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Dam: not something he asked but something he did. We had just released our album "Alternatifs" in 2003 and were playing a couple of gigs in France, and this young couple shows up and they know all the lyrics, every single word. I was in shock, it was the first time someone knew our lyrics like that, by heart. Very deep and cherished memories.

Seub: I used to play in a covers band on the side and we just had finished a show in the southeast France. A lad wanted us to play Highway to Hell. We told him sorry mate we're done for the night. So he started to spread big money in front of us till we accept to play the song... And we did lol! I did not have any trouble paying my bills that time thanks to him ah ah !!!

13. What do you think of your fans?

Niko: What we got fans ?! Yeah !!! Nah seriously they are just so cool to show up at our shows and follow us on social networks. We so appreciate every single one of them.

Dam: It's also pretty awesome to see old friends and fans from the beginning now bringing their children to the shows. Means the world to us. Thank you so much!

14. What do you think of our site?

Seub: What you do is essential. You support indie music and give all of us bands and artists great opportunities to share our music and connect with others. Priceless.

Dam: yeah very nice answering these questions. Thanks for the opportunity and keep on supporting artists like you do, you guys are amazing!

15. Something to add?

Niko: we just finished recording 3 new songs and we're super excited about it! Make sure to follow us so you can hear about it soon 🙂 https://bfan.link/ici-ailleurs-1
