Interviews: Negatives

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore band, Negatives from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Our bass player, Aidan, originally coined the name after listening to Newcastle-based band Love the Sinner’s EP – ‘Negatives’, released in 2016. Everyone loved the suggestion and it just stuck.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

It just made sense, everyone had their own projects at the time and had the desire to write and perform some heavier material inspired by what we were all listening to at the time, luckily we all shared a similar vision and here we are.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

The short version would be - members Alex, Aidan, and Sam all performed in Newcastle band Guilt City for several years. Sparham attended college with Alex. Sparham was also part of the local music scene with the instrumental metal band Eunoia. Ben and Alex originally met in secondary school and he was subsequently introduced to the other members upon returning to the northeast from university studies in 2018.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

This is a very hard question that has had everyone stumped as we all listen to so much music, so a couple of random favorites are - Slipknot, Green Day, American Football, Tool, Gojira, Pink Floyd, Smashing Pumpkins, John Mayer, Meshuggah, Loathe, Plini in no particular order.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Various things can inspire the lyric writing process as that stays quite separate from the instrumental writing up until we start demoing a certain track. It could be real-life events happening in the news, past trauma, or even films and television, there is a story to be found in everything.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last show was back in February performing at PLAY BREW Co. in Middlesbrough supporting Motions

7. Where would you like to play?

All of us have the desire to travel and see new places, so anywhere outside of the UK would be a dream, particularly in mainland Europe!

8. Who would you like to support?

I think if the opportunity to support Silent Planet arose, we’d all faint.

9. Who not?

Oh no, we’re not touching that one.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We all go through bouts of nervousness pre-show every now and again, some more so than others. In terms of advice, firstly remember to breathe, get through the first maybe even the second song, then you’re golden.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Although each member has an eclectic taste, as a writing collective we consciously find influence from acts such as – Slipknot, Silent Planet, Lamb of God, Loathe, Gojira, and Architects to name but a few.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Honestly, up until this point, no one has asked for anything weird. Everyone who has come up to us before or after a show has been lovely. I suppose the most left-field request we can think of would be people requesting our vocalist give them screaming tuition, which again was very humbling.

13. What do you think of your fans?

To have the support of any kind is really humbling to us, and to see familiar faces at our shows or people singing along to our songs is amazing, we couldn't be more thankful for that support!

14. What do you think of our site?

Giving independent music a platform is an incredible thing! That seems to be a rarity nowadays so what you guys are doing is amazing. Thank you so much for having us!

15. Something to add?

We’re back in the studio currently working on our next batch of songs, when that is released we don’t quite know yet know. We’re also excited to be playing live again, you can follow us on socials to keep up-to-date on all our announcements and activities!
