Interviews: VAZUM

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Deathgaze band, VAZUM from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Vasum was an unreleased sega genesis game. I liked the way it looked and sounded. I changed the spelling to a Z since my name is Zach. I like words with V's and Z's. All our albums are V words.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Distorted guitar is just what I was drawn to from a young age. It's been important to remain a guitar-heavy band. I naturally gravitate toward dissonance. That's been my writing style from day one. I've never been into pop music. I've always been drawn to the darker side of things.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Me and Emily met as friends and dated first. Then we started playing music together after a previous band member quit. At the time I didn't know her full musical ability. It took a while before I understood just how good she is.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

VR Sex is our favorite new/current band. For older bands, Emily's would be Skinny Puppy and mine would be Smashing Pumpkins.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

A lot of our songs are inspired by anger. And the anger could be caused by a specific incident/person or more of a general thing with where society is going. Emily also likes to write about dark fairy tales and stories.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was in Lansing Michigan for a goth prom event that had a lot of unique and interesting people and good energy.

7. Where would you like to act?

We would like to play in Europe and experience different cultures.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

We would like to play with VR Sex.

9. Whom not?

We don't want to be involved with any sort of Pop stars or mainstream acts.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Not so much stage fright, but more just being nervous. The only thing I can recommend is practice, practice, and practice so when you get on stage it's automatic and you don't have to think about what you're doing.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Love and Rockets, Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie, and The Banshees, My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails to name a few.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Not an ask and not weird - recently a fan wrote a poem for Emily at a show. She gave it to Emily afterward. It was really sweet and we kept it.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We think the world of our fans. We owe it to them to put on a great show.

14. What do you think of our site?

Your site is wonderful and we are honored to be included. It's a great way to find out about new music and bands. And hear about the creative process which I find most interesting.
