Interviews: Mercer

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band, Mercer from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Kian’s girlfriend came up with it one night when we were about to perform onstage and still didn't have a name! We thought it sounded catchy and just decided to go with it since there weren’t any better ideas at the time, and the name kinda stuck!

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We're all big fans of rock and take inspiration from bands such as Royal Blood, Muse, Led Zeppelin just to name a few. The entire band also has experience playing rock with others and are familiar with the genre.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Before the band was formed, we were actually two separate bands. After those bands fell apart we joined together and got to know each other very well. Te, Sand, and Josh, actually went to school together and were in the same GCSE Music class. If you do enough digging online you can probably find a young Te and Sand perform Superstition by Stevie Wonder together!

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Te (Singer) - Queen

Josh (Lead Guitar) - All Good Things

Gabe (Rhythm Guitar) - Arctic Monkeys

Kian (Drums) - Led Zeppelin

Sand (Bass) - My Chemical Romance

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

A lot of inspiration for our songs comes from bands like Royal Blood, Muse, and artists with similar sounds. We'll often jam out to a riff when rehearsing and then develop our songs from there.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our Last gig was at The Bunkhouse, down Swansea. We had a great time there and can't wait to go back! The staff there is so friendly, and the sound system is top-notch! We’ve played there a couple times now and every time the crowds have been amazing!

7. Where would you like to act?

Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff is a great venue that we would love to play at. We’ve heard so many good things about the venue and the opportunity to play there would be so cool!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are a ton of bands that we would love to play with! There are a few that have played near us recently such as James and the Cold Gun and Valhalla Awaits that we would love to share the stage with someday, but also so many small bands in the local scene which we’ve been meaning to get in touch with!

9. Whom not?

There aren't really any bands that we wouldn't play with. As long as we can get along with them and they want to share their passion for music, we're happy to share a stage!

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Kian: During a lot of our first gigs I was terrified while performing onstage. After a while, I began to enjoy it more and now I love performing to audiences. The best advice I could give, although cliché, is to just relax and enjoy it!

Sand: I used to have a huge fear of singing in public, and basically refused to do any sort of vocal performance for a long time! One day I decided to take the plunge and sing in an open mic night. I was shaking on stage and could barely get a word out! What I realized was that no matter what you think of your own abilities as a musician, every single person on the other side of that stage wants to see you do well, and knowing that you have that support from complete strangers is really helpful in overcoming any doubts about performing.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

As previously mentioned, bands like Royal Blood and Muse have really influenced our songwriting and style, though we are constantly trying out new things and seeing what works. A lot of the riffs that Gabe comes up with are heavily inspired by Arctic Monkeys and the influence of John Bonham's drumming on Kian is clear in our live performances.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We've never had too many strange requests from fans - Sand has ended up signing a chest or two, and Josh often ends up getting asked to strip off whilst performing, but other than that we can’t say we’ve experienced anything that bad. Our fans are normally quite sensible, to give them credit!

13. What do you think of your fans?

We're lucky that we have such a great fan base who regularly turn up to gigs and support us. Without them, we wouldn't be where we are now. We often talk to fans after gigs and we can honestly say that every single encounter we’ve had has been amazing, they’re all such nice people, and we’re very fortunate to have that!

14. What do you think of our site?

It's a great site that's helping independent artists gain exposure and supporting all acts regardless of what stage they are at in their music career.

15. Something to add?

Thanks for the interview, we've loved answering these questions! If we sound like a band you'd be interested in, feel free to follow us on Instagram at @mercerbanduk
