Interviews: Beautiful Skeletons
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or did it just come out like that?
Tina: The band name actually came out of the early days of the project. Back when we had our original 3-piece, very casual jam band style setup, and we were recording all of the impromptu songs we were starting to write at that time, our drummer at that time. His name was Chad, he didn't know what to name these, because we hadn't discussed a project name or song titles, so in the spirit of that he just started naming them, "beautiful skeletons 1" and "beautiful skeletons 2" etc, you know, just the skeleton of the song and when we saw that we were like - that's really cool and that is where the band name spawned from.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Tina: I think that's kind of a loaded question. Mostly because I would say that the majority of us, including past members, weren't necessarily looking for a specific genre to play, I think it's very understated when bands are forming that they go with the vibe and the compatibility of the musicians as a group and not necessarily looking to create something in any specific genre, I mean, in a loose sense that makes sense, cause we all do have a lot of commonalities in the style of music that we like, but actually the flavor that makes our music super unique is that, on the flipside of that, we all enjoy and experience and create music in some very diverse genres against each other's personal tastes and that discrepancy, I feel like, really helps define our sound as being sort of between certain genres. Loosely, I'm sure that everybody would say they would most likely be prone to joining a rock or a metal band versus, say, I don't know, like a gospel band, but for the most part, I wouldn't say that any of us joined a specific genre. We looked for a group of musicians that we could really resonate with on every level.
Jason: I was just finishing a 6-year run with a country artist and wanted something different.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Tina: The band formed originally between our original drummer, Chad, and our guitarist Einar. They have been lifelong friends and have played in several projects together over a long span of time. So when their last project was up, they decided to just kick around this little jam session between the two of them. So those two knew each other, and then our guitarist reached out to me through a Craigslist ad, looking for a vocalist, which is how I (Tina) ended up meeting them both. Several lineup changes later, Jason (Bass) and Huwy (Drums) joined the fold.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Tina: Jack off Jill or Sevendust
Einar: AIC or Sevendust
Jason: Kenny Loggins, Texas Hippie Coalition
Huwy: Deftones or AIC
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Tina: The world around us, the air we breathe, the people we love, the enemies we hate, the animals we treasure, the food we eat, the good times, the bad times, and all the in-between times. Every day we wake up above ground is another day filled with endless inspiration just waiting to be tapped into.
6. Where was your last gig?
Tina: Last gig was at the Whiskey in LA with the Iron Maidens! We always love playing with them, and the Whiskey is one of our favorites.
7. Where would you like to act?
Tina: Not sure what that means, but we can tell you what festival would be on our bucket list - Wakken!
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Tina: Kittie would be amazing!
9. Whom not?
Tina: Justin Bieber, no explanation needed really.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Tina: Everyone experiences some level of anxiety before a show; that anxiety is a good thing - use it to make sure you are ready to perform at your peak. Embrace the anxiety and allow it to move through you instead of fighting it - it is a normal component of performing! For beginners, know that even the most experienced individuals in the world experience some level of stage anxiety. Mental and physical checklists can help ease pre-performance anxiety, and during your show, use your anxiety to keep yourself focused!
Jason: I used to get it so bad, one time I thought I was going to have a heart attack. It was 2019; I was playing a showcase in Salt Lake. I could feel my heart pounding in my throat, and my left arm went numb. I just kept telling myself, don't collapse on stage; I have to finish this first.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Tina: We draw inspiration from bands like Deftones, AIC, Korn, Kittie, Poppy, Jinjer, Spiritbox, In This Moment, Sevendust, Killswitch Engage, Scarling, Evanescence, Adema, Tantric, Manson, POD, Ghosts, Drowning Pool, Puddle of Mudd, and many other alt rock artists of the 90s/2000s era
Jason: This is not a quick question for me; I listen to so many different genres of music. But when you hear anything, it's in your head, and it will come out at some point.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Tina: A concrete seagull lawn ornament featured in our very first music video.
Jason: My autograph. You know I’m the bass player, right?
13. What do you think of your fans?
Tina: Without them, music is dead. Our fans are the lifeblood for music, regular people who choose to spend their time and money to support us - we owe them everything.
Jason: Skellies; they are krazy, but in a good way. They are the kindest people.
14. What do you think of our site?
Tina: We love your site, and we are happy to be on it twice - thank you! It is so important to keep music alive and especially with today's world - sites like yours give musicians like us even more ways to connect with our fans and future fans.
