Interviews: Spylights

In this new occasion we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock songwriter Spylights, from USA. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

It just came to me one day when I was feeling trapped in my life by redundancy.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

I have always wanted to play rock roll since I was a little kid. I’ve always been a fan of all kinds of musical genres that are incorporated in Spylights’s sound including jazz, metal, prog, folk, punk, classical, R&B, classic rock, grunge, alternative, electronica, and easy listening at points. I always try to mix up the approach by combining different feels and layers as often as possible in the music I write without it being forced, typical, or just too contrived in left field.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

I was pretty much the whole band until just very recently, when I was lucky enough to assemble a very talented group of friends to learn the songs that I recorded in the studio.

4. Each band member’s favourite bands?

I’d say for myself it would be Queen, Iron Maiden, or John Mayer. My guitarist would say Plini, Snarky Puppy, or Guthrie Govan. My drummer would say the Mars Volta or Funky Knuckles. My bassist would prob say the Cure, Periphery, or Karnivool.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

My family, my girl, love, my dogs, empathy, chaos in the world, depression, confusion, nostalgia, regret, appreciation, anger, or just being lost. It could really be any of those things and even sometimes in different combinations depending on the timing.

6. Where was your last gig?

Technically my last gig was at the Southport Hall, one of my favorite live venues here in my hometown!

7. Where would you like to act?

I’d love to one day play Wembley stadium, but it doesn’t seem like it is in the cards for me in this lifetime!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

I think Spylights would be a great fit with bands like Thrice, Coheed & Cambria, The Dear Hunter, Karnivool or Dredg.

9. Whom not?

No mumble rappers or any artists that sound like pitch corrected robots.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We all have gone through it at the beginning stages of our careers and we go through it even now as veterans. The only advice I would say would be practice your material so thoroughly and repetitiously that your muscle memory could do it in your sleep. After that everything else falls into place and you can relax when your hard work pays off through the cheers and yells of a happy crowd live!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Over the years I would say Queen, Rush, Incubus, Sunny Day Real Estate, Michael Jackson, Iron Maiden, James Taylor, Devin Townsend, and more recently Plini and Haken. All full of integrity, very colorful, dynamic and unique and powerful in their own ways!

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

A Godsmack cover.

13. What do you think of your fans?

They mean the universe to me for supporting me through the good times and the bad not matter what. I will always be thankful for the attention and loyalty all my friends and fans have shown me through the years!

14. What do you think of our site?

An awesome music site that gives unknown and unsigned artists a chance to be heard and publicized around the globe!

15. Something to add?

I just wanted to say I really appreciate your time and thank you for publishing this article about my band so others can check us out! The Ep will be released within the next few months for free at Spylights.Bandcamp.com!
