Interviews: The Chapter

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band The Chapter from Portugal. Check out the interview and this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Hi, there. Well, I think the name came up with the idea of starting a new chapter in our song. It was not a name with a specific meaning, but it was simple and clear to identify. Nowadays, with the searches on the internet, this name is quite difficult to find the band. Anyway looking for The Chapter Portugal, the band is easily found.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We had no clear desire to play this kind of music. The music came up according to the taste of each one of us. Music is not made by an element. Everyone participates in the elaboration and suggestion of ideas. So, what happens is that we combine different types of music in the same song. The combination is always well thought out and elaborated with care because we do not want the music to look like a set of riffs glued one behind the other ...

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes, some members of the band already knew each other from other projects and out-of-band friendships. The change of singer is an example of this. Pedro Rodrigues joined the band due to the fact that The Chapter already had a concert with Pedro's former band.

4. Each band member favorite band?

The personal taste of each element is not linear. We have more doom phases, then we can have more Death and Thrash stages. We can identify some tastes, but not as a reference. Drummer Pedro Antunes likes Alcest and Opeth, bassist Eurico Mealha likes Amon Amarch and Arch Enemy. Vocalist Pedro Rodrigues likes Sister of Mercy and Cradle of Fifth. Guitarists João Gomes and Pedro Almeida like Gojira, Nevermore, Paradise Lost and Katatonia. Anyway, the list could continue ...

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

As we have already said, the songs come from individual ideas that are then complemented by the band. We create a basis for the song and then we can insert an intro, an acoustic, a riff plus death or doom. Regarding lyrics, after the base and structure of the track are made, the vocalist creates the melodies and with this conjugation and inspiration, he inserts the lyrics for the song.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at the Stairway Club in Cascais. We are participating in a contest for a main event that is the Vagos Metal Fest. It was a very dynamic concert with an excellent reaction from the audience.

7. Where would you like to perform?

We would like to participate in Vagos Metal Fest. We have other summer festivals that we like such as Milagre Metaleiro or Casainhos Fest 2018. It would also be great to have dates to do a mini tour in the north of the country with concerts in Porto and Viseu. We will try to book a concert for the south of the country, specifically at Bafo de Baco.

8. Whom would you like to perform with?

It's a funny question because it comes following the concerts we want to attend. Playing with Rasgo or Heavenwood would be a privilege. Of course playing with Moonspell would be the ultimate exponent, but above all we want to have good gigs with friendly bands.

9. Whom not?

We do not oppose anyone. We will not refuse an offer for being a particular support band or for being a place we do not want. As long as the conditions are met so that we can play and give a good concert, we accept.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Fear of going on stage may be related to insecurity or fear of failure. In our case, as we rehearse every week and train well before the concerts, we know exactly what to do. We are sure of what we are going to do and this then becomes simpler approach to concerts. Of course, we can miss a note, but it's not the end of the world ...

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

We can’t say for sure that direct influences existed on the album. We can say that the band has influences of Opeth, Gojira, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, but we can also say that there are other bands that certainly also influenced the way we compose.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

The contact with our public never had orders out of the ordinary. We had good reactions and some suggestions. We like what we hear and always consider what we are told. We always try to do our best and know how to listen to the public's opinion.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We have a varied public set. Some who like more death metal music and others
who like more melodic music with calmer rhythms. We know that nowadays it is
not easy to please everyone, but we try to keep our identity and make the music we like. I think with the album that we did "Angels and Demons" we were able to show our fans that our music really has a very strong and special feeling.

14. What do you think of our site?

We really like the site. It has many illustrations and is easy to obtain information. I think the structure is very well assembled. The bands are underground and I
think it is very important to have a website that has a set of bands of this genre. Excellent job.

15. Something to add?

We want to thank you for the invitation and for the possibility of giving us an interview. Many thanks and continuation of good work. Cheers ... see you soon.
