Interviews: Sails Of Serenity

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the  Progressive Metalcore band Sails Of Serenity from Turkey. Check out the interview and this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Actually, it just came out of nowhere. We were planning to find a name that doesn’t have any citations to anything and we found Sails of Serenity.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

We don’t adapt to a certain genre, but our music is shaped by what inspires us when writing new music. Our favorite bands are Architects, Periphery, Tesseract, and so on, so listening to these bands effects our music.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Sercan and I (Selim) have known each other since 2011, but Sails of Serenity came into existence in 2013 and we met Harun and Alter around that time.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Selim (Vocals) - Architects

Sercan (Guitar) - Tesseract

Harun (Guitar) - I love Ne Obliviscaris, but lately we are crazy about Silent Planet as a band.

Alter (Drums) - My latest favorite is Thank You Scientist, but anything progressive/modern is alright for me.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Our daily endeavours inspire us to write songs. Our emotions and experiences, reactions to daily events, news on the TV, and basically everything that’s happening in the world. All these move us to write something new. Also, there is an undying thirst to produce something new.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at Black Sea Metal Festival in Odessa, Ukraine on 29th of June. It was great, a huge thanks to Ukrainian music lovers.

7. Where would you like to act?

We would like to go anywhere we can play our songs to people basically. For the time being, Eastern Europe seems to be our second home.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Sam Carter from Architects, Daniel Tompkins from Tesseract, or Jonny Hawkins from Nothing More.

9. Whom not?

Can’t think of anyone that we would refuse a feature with. Music is a beauty which comes out of differences.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We never actually had stage fright but whatever you do, it is always exciting to go on the stage to sing/play your songs to people; it is about sharing private emotions. The only tip we can give is to be confident about what you are singing about. Don’t be afraid or sorry to share what you have in your mind and heart. Look at their eyes and let them feel what you feel.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Architects, While She Sleeps, and Tesseract are the main inspirations, but we also love Northlane, Periphery, and so on. Also, there are hundreds of inspiring bands that we discover everyday. We’re hungry for new ones because it’s the key to improving ourselves.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We never experienced something we can call weird but I can tell some lovely fan stories. After our latest show in Black Sea Metal Festival, Odessa, a fan asked us to sign her arm. I was like, “uh, nothing else to sign I guess?”. Before that, in Belarus, United Metal Festival, an old guy came to me after the show and spoke to me (Selim) in Russian, which I didn’t understand at all. Then he grabbed my arm, took me to the bar, and bought me a vodka shot. It was super cool.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love them and we are grateful for their love and support. They are amazing. We ask them to spread the love to their friends.

14. What do you think of our site?

We first heard of Breathing the Core when they featured our song on their website and we’ve been following the website ever since. One of the best content creators in heavy music.

15. Something to add?

Thank you so much for this interview. Our most recent single “Left Behind” came out last month and finally the upcoming album ‘The Crossing’ is out on 17th of August. Stay tuned for new music.
