Interviews: Malum Sky

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metal band Malum Sky from UK. Check out the interview and this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The band name was the result of a lot of trial and error with different words and phrases being suggested by everyone trying to come up with something that read and sounded right. Malum is from the Latin meaning “evil” or “wrongdoing”. The name “Malum Sky” represents the idea that there is beauty in dark things, like our world, which is kind of ugly and beautiful at the same time.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

We don't consciously play a particular genre of music. We're undoubtedly a product of our own individual influences and they are varied, but what pigeon-hole we fit into is usually decided by the listener.

3.Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Mike (guitar) and Saki (bass) knew each other already and are effectively the founding members of the band.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Choosing a favourite band is tough but these are our desert island discs...

Ben – Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Jon – Karnivool – Sound Awake
Mike – Periphery – Periphery II: This Time it's Personal
Saki – Rage Against The Machine – Rage Against The Machine
Joe – Mastodon – Crack the Skye

5.Who or what inspires you to write songs?

A love of all music and a healthy creative drive gets us in a room with our instruments and then it's a case of experimenting and finding a groove. The process of writing music is full of inspiration and eureka moments that contribute to a song. Inspiration can come from anywhere, sometimes it's just the riff someone is playing and sometimes it's a more complicated process.

6.Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was supporting the mighty Sikth at The Globe in Cardiff. A fantastic gig and an honour to support such an incredible band.

7. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We all did back when we started out playing in bands! The best advice is to be well rehearsed and practice often. Feeling comfortable and confident on stage is something that comes with experience. As long as you know you parts and your equipment is reliable then you should get out there and start conquering your fear. People love to be entertained!

8. What bands have inspired you the most?

We all have eclectic tastes in music so that's a difficult question to answer! Although Malum Sky's music exists in the metal/rock framework, we might have been listening to some jazz or Mozart before we wrote the last riff! Other metal bands are definitely an influence on us as well and it's natural to measure yourself against your peers and what has come before you.

9. What do you think of your fans?

We'd like to think they have good taste in music! We are grateful that such a wide demographic of people appreciate our songs and we hope that they will stick with us as our music grows and develops over time. We're pretty excited for them to hear our new mini-album!

10. What do you think of our site?

It's great! Easy to navigate and full of new music waiting to be discovered. We are grateful for your support and the exposure you provide for the underground scene. Long may it continue!

11. Something add?

Yes! In November we release a new music video, the first track to be released from our upcoming mini-album "Diatribe" coming out in January 2019. In December we'l be hitting you with something else new for Christmas before the album drops in the new year. We will also be releasing some behind the scenes videos, giving you an insight into recording the mini-album and how we created the music videos. Like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube channel to get this new music in your feed when it's released!
