Interviews: Dead Fall

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Pop Punk band Dead Fall from USA. Check out the interview and this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name?

Our guitarist, Anthony, actually came up with the name back in high school just before submitting the band for the high school rock off. There wasn’t really a specific reason for the name, but it always stuck.

2.What drew you towards playing pop punk?

In the first few years we were all really into bands like The Wonder Years, Knuckle Puck, The Story So Far etc.. and I feel like some of that comes through on the first Ep that we released, Desperate Situations, but as time went on we all sort of shifted and started listening to some grungier/ darker music. And I think you can really hear how that shift effected the songs on Never Expected.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Ryan and I (Jake), have known each other since around middle school and had actually jammed together a few times before joining Dead Fall. Nick and Anthony met in high school about a year prior to me and Ryan joining the band. Our bassist, Trevor, is our newest member. He joined us about a year ago after a friend of ours contacted him saying we were in need of a bassist.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Jake: Title Fight

Anthony: Citizen

Nick: Teenage Wrist

Trevor: Can't Swim

Ryan: Title Fight

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I would say the bands that inspire us the most are bands like Title Fight, Citizen, Basment, The Story so Far, and Touché Amore

6. Where was your last gig?

We played at The Foundry in Lakewood back on December 15th for Light Year’s CD release show.

7. What's your dream venue?

I have always thought that playing the Agora Theater in Cleveland would be really cool. We have all seen a lot of our favorite bands play that stage and I feel like there is a little bit of sentimental value there.

8. What's your dream tour package?

If I had to pick a dream tour package I would probably say The Story so Far, Citizen, Super Heaven, and Title Fight. All really solid bands, and I’ve never gotten to see Title Fight or Super Heaven live so that would be a lot of fun.

9. Any of you ever suffer from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I actually still get a little bit of stage fright from time to time. For me it really depends on how frequently we are playing shows and I think that kind of goes for everyone in the band. If we're in the third day of a seven day run, we’re all a lot more comfortable on stage. But if it's the first show that we have played in a few weeks it can be a little more stressful. My advice for dealing with it would be just to think back to your practice. If you were able to play/sing your parts a few days ago at practice, you can still do it now. Something else that helps me a lot is focusing on the back wall of the room. That way you can avoid looking directly at the crowd but still keep them engaged.

10. What bands have inspired you the most?

The bands that have inspired us the most would probably bands like Citizen, Homesafe, Title Fight, Bad Luck, and The Story so Far.

11. What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened in the band or at a show?

I can’t think of anything too crazy that’s really happened to us, although when we were on our last tour with Mallory Run we did lose our van key in a river in the middle of rural Wisconsin. But to be fair I have also locked the keys in the van twice, once in my drive way and once at Steak and Shake.

12. Can you tell us more about your new single "Drowned Out”?

Our drummer Nick is the one who wrote the song but basically its about the conclusion of a long term relationship and really coming to terms with the fact that people can choose to exit your life at a moments notice. The song really encompasses that transition from having someone so deeply engrained into your daily life to them not being there at all.

13. Were there any hurdles in recording the new EP Never Expected?

Was there something that you "never expected" to encounter? 😝 There weren’t too many hurdles that we encountered in the process. One thing was just getting the songs done in time, we didn’t quite wait all the way to the last minute but we definitely cut it a little close. We were actually able to track demos for all of the song prior to recording which was really helpful throughout the recording process. But other than that the recording process was pretty seamless, Seth at Always Be Genius was super easy to work with and really helped us get the most out of these songs.

14. What do you have planned post-release?

As far as our plans after the release we have a few things lined up at the moment. Our EP release show will be February 8th at Mahalls in Lakewood, OH as well as a few tour dates that we will be announcing in the coming weeks.
