Interviews: Within Nostalgia

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band Within Nostalgia from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The band's name initially was just Nostalgia and the idea behind the name came from the word itself, remembering a past fondly despite the fact it may have been nothing like that in reality. The “Within” was added to further the whole nostalgia definition and to separate us from the many other “Nostalgias”.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

In the beginning, no particular style was taken into consideration but as the writing progressed we seem to have found ourselves in a Blackgaze or post-rock field. It’s the atmosphere of that genre that draws us in, favoring a more introspective feel whereas a lot of Metal is very in your face and does not require a lot of deep thought.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

I (Kye) and Alyssa knew each other prior to Within Nostalgia. We would take buses to and from North Bay and Burlington to see each other and jam at a place called The Jam Zone. The band was technically formed when it was Alyssa’s solo project, but after a relocation to North Bay the lineup was filled with mutual friends.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Alyssa- Enslaved

Kye- Type O Negative

Sara-Vi- Korpiklaani

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Simply put, it’s the exercising of negative emotion or any emotion really within us put into a musical medium.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was here in our home town of North Bay for our CD release of Conjuring A New Reality. The turnout was even better than we could have hoped for. Our friends in Before The Black Gates and Hexenklad shared the stage with us that night.

7. Where would you like to act?

It would be great to explore some more of our own country, particularly the coastal regions but if ever given the chance we would love to play anywhere in Europe. People there seem to be much more open-minded when it comes to varying styles of Metal.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

As a band, we would probably all say Alcest just because they really are one of our biggest influences and innovators of the whole blackgaze genre as well

9. Whom not?

Without mentioning any band names or individuals, we probably wouldn’t want to feature with any Punk or Death Metal bands. We’ve played a lot of shows with bands in those genres and it really kills the mood and feeling of our music in comparison.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I think all of us have suffered from stage freight at one point or another but once you start playing it seems to subside. As for anyone else dealing with it, really just pay attention to your instrument and what you’re doing, not the people around you.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Some of the bands that have inspired us the most would be Alcest, Enslaved, Woods Of Ypres, Agalloch and Heretoir.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

It’s not extremely weird but a ride to New Castle, Ontario. We were on our way down and he had to move into a shack on the shores of Lake Ontario.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We are so grateful for our fans and everything they’ve done for us and the things we’ve experienced together. Without them, Conjuring A New Reality and the music video for Death Lifes’ Lover wouldn’t have been possible. Prior to the recording, we did a small fundraiser and our fans helped us out with the cost of everything.

14. What do you think of our site?

It is a very well put together webpage full of information for any kind of Metal or Rock fan.

15. Something add?

Thank you so much for the interview and consideration!
