Band Biographies: Laang

Laang 冷 is a terror black metal band from Keelung City 基隆市 Taiwan, born from horrifying experiences of what lies beyond life by the the band’s frontman 楊海濤 during a near-death experience when shot. While medically dead, 冷 experienced what he can best describe as “a place beyond Hell”. This world beyond death that he experienced was one of incomprehensible terror and desolation beyond explanation. The band’s debut album Hǎiyáng 海洋 encapsulates this horrifying otherworld of emptiness, inhuman madness, and crushing terror.

Hǎiyáng 海洋 was released internationally in June 2019 on the Austrian label Talheim Records, the world’s fastest-growing black metal record label. The album was awarded the Kaohsiung City National Cultural Award and featured in the Heavy Music Artwork Top 100 Album Covers of 2019. The band will release their second album “Xinteng” in 2021 which focuses on the depressive and melancholic trauma born from the experience.

The band’s iconic musical style combines aggressive and non-canonical black metal riffing with melancholic melodies, tortured vocals performed in Mandarin Chinese, dark orchestras, and traditional erhu instrumentation.
