Interviews: Coastlines

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Hardcore/Post-Hardcore band, Coastlines, from Norway. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Aaron: Emil didn’t like the first name «Murder the Traitor» and I had just been on a cruise, so I tried to come up with something with the ocean

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Jan: I kinda grew up on like the whole "New Wave of American Metal" thing with bands like Killswitch Engage, Poison The Well, Shai Hulud,As i lay Dying and such, and friends from my hometown in Gudbrandsdalen were playing in a metalband and got me into it. I started yelling in their band and it just clicked..

Aaron: Metalcore and Hardcore has always been a genre I look up too and listen to alot, reason was that nobody wanted to do the deathcore thing with me and I had alot of old riffs laying around that I could’t use in what I wrote earlier, and this is now the foundation of Coastlines

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Emil: We (Aaron and Emil) go way back, we got to know each other from playing in a local band at 14 (back in 2009). The band didn't go anywhere but we just just kept hanging out ever since. Jan came into the picture in 2018.

Aaron: I knew Emil way back, in 2008-09, he got me into guitars and both tech death and progressive music, he opened doors for me and my music, and know he makes my music sound killer and get the right attitude / vibe

4. Each band member favourite band?

Jan: There's so many, but I'll make two lists, one for all time and one for the ones I listen to right now.. All time top 5:; Poison The Well, Shai Hulud, Killswitch Engage, Knocked Loose, The Ghost Inside. Favourites at the moment Obzene, Frostbitt, Frail Body, Kalandra, Bilmuri

Emil: Favourite band is Leprous

Aaron: mine is either Fit for a King, Emmure, Nirvana and Mayhem

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Jan: My main inspiration is just life in general, I can't say that I've had a tough life, or that things were hard. So I mostly write my lyrics from the perspective of what happens around me. The suicide of my older brother has been a huge influence on how i view the world, and that definitely has colored alot of what i write. Aaron and Emil have this amazing ability to write melodies and songs that hit straight to the feels. So that makes things so easy for me.Emil and Aaron also give me just about free reign to write whatever I want, as long as it doesn't directly contradict their principles or beliefs, and that's really freeing.

Aaron: What I listen to, what kind of mood I’m in, if I go through alot and have a really bad day, I then come up with my best songs and riffs.

6. Where was your last gig?

Jan: Coastlines haven't gigged yet, we were gonna gig, and then we had no drummer, and Corona happened so we haven't had that pleasure yet. But fuck, we want to though, would love to see som happy faces. But my last one was as a guest vocalist for a Thrash band here in Norrway named Steel Wizard.

Emil: This was as the band's former name «Murder the Traitor» it wasn’t so good (band came apart and the EP became a solo thing, where I had to do most of it alone) before Emil contacted me on trying to make something cool.

7. Where would you like to act?

Jan: I don't really have any preferences, I'd love to pay in front of people who are at a show to have a good time.If I were to choose in Norway id probably pick a place like John Dee or Vaterland in Oslo.

Aaron: Around US where my Favourites played, or just all over to explore the world and what it has to offer us

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Jan: I'd love to play with most of the other bands in the metal genre in Norway to be honest. For me the ultimate gig would be Killswitch Engage, Unearth or Poison the Well..

Aaron: Friends and people we work with, or maybe artists from the bands favourites list perhaps.

9. Whom not?

Jan: I dont think theres anyone I would avoid playing with. Most people and most bands are doing the same thing we're doing; grinding as much as possible and trying to get our particular flavour of music out there.

Aaron: I don’t have much of a comment there, but not people who are hard to work with

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Jan: I've never had stagefright, I mean I'm usually nervous as shit before going on stage, but when your up there, and the music starts playing the adrenaline pumps those jitters away. A single beer also helps (never drink too much beer before singing, people)

Aaron: It’s kind of always there, you’re always kinda scared, but the best way would be, play your own music, and what you love and think is the coolest to perform.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Jan: Poison The Well, Purified in Blood, Bleeding Through

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Jan: I can't think of anything weird, I really don't know

13. What do you think of your fans?

Jan: The very few people that actually follow us and are actively waiting for new music and keep asking for it are the best. They make the whole process of creating so fulfilling. They're awesome.

14. What do you think of our site?

Jan: Breathing The core is an awesome site, Usually when you go to sites like yours, it's really scarce and with not the greatest UI, Looking for anything specific is a chore, but the way your site is built is great for finding new bands. I also really like the way you feature things, it's perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

15. Something add?

Jan: Firstly we'd like to thank you guys for featuring us on your playlist, and taking the time to write about us, sites like yours is one of the most important aspects of the underground music scene, Stay safe people, wear masks when needed, And never compare your average day to others highlights. We'll be releasing a new song October 30. And hope everyone enjoys it, If you want to follow us, hit us up on Facebook, bandcamp or Instagram.
